Flashback: See Iggy & the Stooges' iconic, long-awaited reunion at Coachella 2003

This is Flashback, where we’re reminiscing about some of the most iconic and obscure moments in alt-rock history. This week, we’re looking at when Iggy Pop and the Stooges reunited at Coachella in 2003.

Coachella has long been a major pop cultural event. From Beychella and iconic performances from Draft Punk and Price to the controversial Tupac hologram, you can always count on the festival to inspire a new moment in music history.

One of the biggest moments to date in alternative-rock and punk history at the fest, though, was when Iggy & the Stooges reunited after decades apart. As fans of the iconic, Ann Arbor-bred band the Stooges know, their career was short-lived and prolific, forming in the late ’60s and disbanding in 1971. Then, billed as Iggy & the Stooges, Iggy Pop and brothers Ron and Scott Asheton released Raw Power two years later in 1973 with the help of David Bowie, before the band ultimately broke up again in ’74 and Pop eventually went solo.

By the power of the rock gods, the group finally reunited live at Coachella in 2003 — nearly three decades later. That year, the Ashetons collaborated on Pop’s album Skull Ring, so it was all but inevitable that they would appear together on stage once again. At the festival, they played after the White Stripes, and filled their set with proto-punk favorites like “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “T.V. Eye,” “1970,” “Fun House,” “L.A. Blues,” and more.
