Ulrich recently revealed that “Sad But True” is one of his all-time favorite Metallica songs. In an interview with GQ, he said that the 1991 track has always been one he enjoys playing the most.

“I just love playing that song,” he said. “I play it a little differently each time [and] I love the tempo and giving it a different interpretation every time I play it.”

Now, Ulrich has shared which Metallica song he never wants to hear again. In an interview with Vulture, he reveals that his least favorite song across Metallica’s ten-album career comes from 1988’s …And Justice For All.

“There’s a song called ‘Eye Of The Beholder‘ on the …[And] Justice [For All] album,” he says. “Wherever I hear that song, it sounds kind of like, I guess we don’t want to be super-disrespectful to it, but it sounds really forced.”

He goes on to share that the composition of the song is what makes it one of his least favorite in the band’s career.

“It sounds like you put a square peg in a round hole,” he continues. “It sounds like it’s got two different tempos. There’s kind of a 4/4 feel in the intro and on the verses, and then I think the choruses are more like in a waltz tempo. It literally sounds like two different worlds rubbing up against each other. It sounds very awkward to me. I’m not a huge fan of that song.”

Although “Eye Of The Beholder” is his least favorite, he doesn’t want his opinion to deter someone from listening to or enjoying the song. For Ulrich, he shares that he is overly critical about Metallica’s music.

“It’s basically almost impossible for me to listen to a Metallica song without going, ‘Okay, how are the sonics, how’s the mix, how does the guitar sound? The vocals are too loud, the bass is too boomy,'” he says. “It becomes this exercise in analytics. When you hear your favorite band — like if I listened to Rage Against the Machine or something, I just fucking let myself go. But when Metallica comes on it’s like, ‘Huh?’”

In other Metallica news, Kirk Hammett recently revealed why the band still makes their whiskey following James Hetfield‘s return to rehab in 2019. As well, Metallica’s new album S&M2 was the top debut album on the Billboard 200, beating out Katy Perry‘s Smile for the coveted spot.
