Lauren Ruth Ward is over “Super Bullshit” in folky new song—watch

Singer-songwriter Lauren Ruth Ward is teaming up with AltPress to premiere her last song of 2019, “Super Bullshit.”

The year-closing track follows previous singles dropped throughout the past 12 months: “Valhalla,” “I Touch Myself,” “Pullstring,” “Hungry Barber,” “We Are Grown Ups,” “Same Soul” and “Wise Gal.”

“Super Bullshit” wraps up the year and a friendship, taking on the emotions behind parting ways with someone you’re close with.

“[It’s] a song about breaking up with an argumentative friend and a painting that says, ‘The world is on fire. Stop spending your mind on petty problems,’” Ward explains. “This message goes out to myself. As a dangerously loyal person, breakups equal failure. Sadly, communication isn’t the ointment for all cases.”

However, the music video flips this sentiment on its hea,d with Ward surrounding herself with people she trusts. The vocalist filmed the production process at Route 2 Recording Studios in Eagle Rock, California, where she was working with engineer Zak Mouton and producer Andrew Martin.

Co-written by Ward and Eduardo Rivera, the co-producer also plays guitar in the video animated and directed by Rob Fidel and Tess O’Connor, respectively. Martin plays bass, joining drummer Logan Baudean, keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Victor and background vocalists Chris “Cookie” Hess and Emma Cole.

It was important for Ward to capture the exact opposite of the song’s meaning through the video.

“On the contrast, the music video is the antithesis of this feeling,” Ward explains. “Tess O’Connor, a dear friend and filmmaker, came to the studio to hang, shoot [and] do their thing. Eduardo and I had this tune burning a hole in our back pockets, so there were about four days in between the call from producer, guitarist Andrew Martin and the studio day. When I watched the day unfold through Tess’s footage, I saw my friends, bandmates [and] myself, all creating together. No egos, just seven insanely talented musicians doing what they love to do. So thankful all were able to swing by this day on such short notice and especially Tess for capturing it.”

Ward is currently out on the K-12 tour with Melanie Martinez before hitting the U.K. and Europe with Emma Cole, who provided background vocals on the track, at the end of the month.
