Marvel Phase 4: 11 upcoming movies and TV shows to look forward to

Following Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, the Marvel Cinematic Universe closed the Phase 3 chapter and is now looking ahead to Phase 4.

For the first time in the MCU, viewers will need to watch both the movies and the series (exclusively on Disney+) to keep up with the timeline. Phase 4 will kick off this coming May with the highly anticipated film Black Widow.

If you’ve been living under a rock and aren’t fully caught up on the MCU, there are spoilers ahead. Check out our list of 10 upcoming movies and TV shows from the MCU.

1. Black Widow

Starting with her introduction in Iron Man 2, Black Widow has been in multiple MCU films. Several years and cameos later, the former Russian assassin is finally getting her own film, set to release May 1. Scarlett Johansson will be taking on her role again as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff, along with David Harbour (Stranger Things), Florence Pugh (Midsommar) and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite, The Lovely Bones). 

2. Eternals 

Eternals is the first MCU film introducing these Marvel characters, a fictional race of humanoids. Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley) and Kit Harington (Game Of Thrones) are among the star-studded cast for the film that’s set to release Nov. 6.

3. The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier Disney+ series will see Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their titular roles. The series also features the return of Emily VanCamp as agent Sharon Carter, while it will introduce John Walker, played by Wyatt Russell. Walker was known as a U.S. agent in the comics who looked similar to Captain America, shield and all. The series is set to be released this fall.

4. WandaVision

Even though we saw the tragic death of Vision in Avengers: Infinity War, Paul Bettany will return to his role as Vision in the new series alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. WandaVision will also see appearances from Teyonah Parris as an older Monica Rambeau, a character who made her MCU debut as a child in Captain Marvel, in addition to Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis in the Thor movies), Randall Park (Jimmy Woo in Ant-Man And The Wasp) and Kathryn Hahn. The series is currently set to appear on Disney+ sometime this year.

5. Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi will be making his live action debut with the release of Shang-Chi And The Legend of the Ten Rings. With Simu Liu being revealed as the title role at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con, the film will mark the first in the MCU with an Asian lead. Details are scarce, but The Ten Rings were first referenced in 2008’s Iron Man in and later 2015’s Ant-Man. Tony Leung will portray the Mandarin—a character falsely impersonated in Iron Man 3. The film is set to release in theaters Feb. 12, 2021.

6. Loki

Like Vision, Loki also fell in Avengers: Infinity War, but Tom Hiddleston is back as the God Of Mischief on this upcoming Disney+ show. The series will answer where Loki went after stealing the Tesseract from the Avengers when they time traveled to the Battle of New York to recover the Infinity Stones before Thanos destroyed them. It’s set to be released in the spring of 2021.

7. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

The second film in the Doctor Strange series will see Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) working together in a plot that’s yet to be released. While not totally a horror movie as previously teased, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige did reveal there will be “some new MCU characters” making their debut. The film is currently marked for a May 7, 2021 release with plans to keep that date despite Scott Derrickson stepping away from directing duties at the beginning of the month. 

8. What If…?

The What If…? series will dabble with questions, some maybe even far fetched, about what would happen if situations turned out differently within the MCU. It will see appearances from returning Marvel stars, such as Michael B. Jordan, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Rudd and Natalie Portman.

9. Untitled third Spider-Man

Following a very public negotiation between Sony and Disney, the two signed on jointly to bring Tom Holland back as the web-slinging superhero we all love. This will be Holland’s third Spider-Man movie following Homecoming and Far From Home, with the upcoming film acting as a sequel to the latter. It’s currently slated to be released July 16, 2021. 

10. Hawkeye

The Hawkeye series will follow Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who trains a young Kate Bishop (who takes on the Hawkeye name in the comics) in his act of sharpshooting. The series is set for a fall 2021 release. 

11. Thor: Love And Thunder

Serving as the fourth movie in the Thor saga, Love And Thunder picks up where 2017’s Ragnarok left off. Chris Hemsworth will be rejoined by Natalie Portman (Jane Foster/Thor, The Goddess Of Thunder) and Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie). Thompson will mark the first LGBTQ+ character in the MCU. Christian Bale is also rumored to play Beta Ray Bill. The film hits theaters Nov. 5, 2021 and will conclude Phase 4.
