'A Nightmare On Elm Street' reboot is "still happening" according to 'Aquaman' writer

The potential reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street has been looming on the horizon for a while now, leaving fans unsure if the franchise would actually find its way back to the big screen. Aquaman writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has assured fans that the classic horror films will be seeing a reboot in the future.

The franchise attempted a reboot back in 2010 but critics were quick to tear it apart. While the film performed a little better in the box office, fans have been eagerly awaiting a reboot that would reignite the franchise in all its glory.

In 2015 rumors surfaced that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman) would be the one to write the reboot, but little to no news about the film has been released since.

Now, Johnson-McGoldrick has given fans a little more insight to the future of the franchise in a recent interview with GameSpot.

“It’s still happening,” he said in the interview, but that doesn’t mean we should be expecting the film anytime soon. “Everybody wants to see Freddy again I think, so I think it’s inevitable at some point.”

“Nothing is percolating just yet,” he added, and that’s because Johnson-McGoldrick is currently focusing on a different franchise for New Line Cinema.

“The Conjuring universe is sort of first and foremost on [New Line Cinema’s] horror burner.”

Horror icon Freddy was most famously played by actor Robert Englund who recently reprised the role on a Halloween episode of ABC’s The Goldbergs. It was during this time that Englund admitted he’d had some thoughts about stepping back into the role.

As the rumors for a franchise revival circled, Englund suggested the idea of having multiple actors play Freddy.

“If I had an Eli Roth budget I would have cast different actors to play Freddy for every potential victim,” he said at the 2018 Summer Television Critics Association tour. “Because Freddy is only alive in the imagination of his future victim.”

“They would talk about it at a slumber party or in a locker room at school, or on the bus going home. All we know about this Fred Krueger is he wears a hat, wears a red and green striped sweater and has a clawed hand. That’s the specifics.”
