“Obviously I wrote it”—Courtney Love on Kurt Cobain death scene note

Two weeks ago, Seattle police released a note from legendary Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s death scene. It was initially believed that the note, which was found in Cobain’s wallet, was written by the singer himself. (See the note below.)

But last week, Cobain biographer Charlse R. Cross came out and said that the note was written by Courtney Love—not Cobain. Cross, who wrote the Cobain bio Heavier Than Heaven, claimed that Love emailed him and said she wrote the note prior to the couple’s 1991 wedding.

Now, Love has confirmed her authorship of the note in an interview with The Guardian (who describe the note as “a private, caustic joke about a sexist media that hero-worshipped Cobain while vilifying his wife, a talented artist in her own right”). “Obviously I wrote it – don't you guys understand sarcasm?” she told The Guardian. She also criticized the controversy the note stirred: “It endangers me, and it endangers [Love’s daughter] Frances,” she said.

The note reads:

“Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your Lawful Shredded wife, even when she's a bitch with zits and siphoning all yr money for doping and whoring. Will you promise to fuck her at least once a week, O.K.”
