Do you remember all of the lyrics to “Fireflies” by Owl City?

It’s been just over 10 years since Ocean Eyes, a breakout record for electro-pop outfit Owl City, was unleashed on the world. Among the album’s plethora of synth-soaked cuts was “Fireflies,” a song that needs no introduction.

More on Owl City

Ah, “Fireflies.” The most awkward song to dance to at prom — and yet, a lasting gem of the 2000s. Much to every scene kid’s glee, Owl City (aka Adam Young) finally explained how he gets a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs.

Owl City whipped up a particularly strange lyric in his first hit single, which leaves us with some obvious questions. First, the lines:

“’Cause I’d get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to danc
e”

So what’s going on here? Does each of the ten thousand lightning bugs hug him a thousand times? Do only a tenth of the bugs hug him? Or does the swarm improbably take on a humanoid form that then hugs Owl City a thousand times? These are the questions that keep us up at night.

Turns out, each bug hugs him a thousand times, as Young thoroughly explained on his Twitter. “I was the recipient of 1,000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs for a grand total of 10,000,000 hugs,” he writes. Check out the full explanation here.

Since the release of Ocean Eyes, Owly City has released 2011’s All Things Bright And Beautiful, 2012’s The Midsummer Station and 2015’s Mobile Orchestra.

Most recently, the musician dropped three EPs titled Reel 1, Reel 2 and Reel 3. The tracks from these were then compiled into an 18-track full-length, Cinematic, in 2018. From there, Owl City reimaged some of the track into acoustic versions including “The 5th Of July” from Reel 1, “Montana” from Reel 2 and “Be Brave” from Reel 3.
