A horror-themed reboot of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ is actually happening

Even though Pretty Little Liars ended a few years ago, it looks like “A” has a few more tricks up their sleeve.

On Monday, the first teaser for the “horror-tinged” Pretty Little Liars reboot was unveiled and it’s clear that Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin has some darker days ahead.

According to Deadline, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin is in the works at HBO Max from Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina‘s Lindsay Calhoon Bring.

Written by Aguirre-Sacasa and Calhoon Bring, the reboot is still based on the bestselling YA novels by Sara Shepard. However, this time around, the show will feature a new story and new characters.

In Original Sin, a group of teenage girls (a new set of Little Liars) find themselves tormented by a new “A.” The assailant wants the girls to pay for the secret sins their parents committed nearly two decades ago as well as their own. The new series is miles away from the familiar Rosewood, but still exists within the Pretty Little Liars universe.

“We’re such huge fans of what I. Marlene King and her iconic cast created,” Aguirre-Sacasa and Calhoon Bring say. “We knew that we had to treat the original series as #canon and do something different. So we’re leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honor what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements.”

Original Sin will likely resemble the tones and themes found on Riverdale and Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. The latter was recently canceled on Netflix and will end after its final part premieres later this year. However, there are rumors floating around that the series could be heading to HBO Max, too.

It has not been confirmed if any original cast members from Pretty Little Liars are returning for the reboot. As well, it is unknown when Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin will premiere on HBO Max.

For its entire seven-year run, Pretty Little Liars ranked as the No.1 scripted series on cable TV for the teenage girl demographic. As well, it ranks as the No.1 series ever on Freeform/ABC Family.

The success of the series led to two spinoffs – Pretty Little Liars: Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. Both shows aired for one only season.

Along with Original Sin, HBO Max is also rebooting Gossip Girl. The new series will feature all-new actors and characters. However, the show’s original narrator Kristen Bell is returning for the reboot.
