“Pop, Lock & Drop It” rapper Huey has died at the age of 31

Rapper Huey who is best known for the 2007 hit “Pop, Lock & Drop It” has died at the age of 31.

A spokesperson for the St. Louis Police Department confirmed to Fox News that Huey was shot and killed outside of a home in Kinloch, Missouri.

On Thursday, Huey, who was born Lawrence Franks Jr, was reportedly taken to a local hospital after sustaining injuries in a shooting. He died at the hospital shortly after.

According to reports, another man, 21, was also shot in the incident but is expected to make a full recovery. Police have also reported that as many as 10 other individuals were present at the time of the shooting. They are urging people with information to come forward.

William “Quayshaun” Carter, a music executive, who worked with Huey in the 2010s, confirmed the news of Huey’s death to Pitchfork.

“He was a good kid,” Carter says. “He was raised on the streets and he chose to do something different. He’d just started another business [and] was getting into upscale clothing, and it was working out, and he was happy. His passing is a tragic loss to the hip-hop world. He was a part of hip-hop history.”

Huey rose to fame in the mid-2000s following the release of the hit “Pop, Lock & Drop It.” The song also has a remix that features Bow Wow and T-Pain. At this time, both the original and remix versions of the song have reached over 29 million streams on Spotify.

In 2007, “Pop, Lock & Drop It” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 98 before eventually reaching No. 6 overall. Currently, the single’s video has over 50 million views on YouTube.

Over the course of his career, Huey released two full-length albums. Following the release of his debut LP Notebook Paper in 2007, he collaborated with artists such as Trey Songz and Yo Gotti. In 2010, his sophomore album Redemption was released and he signed to Waka Flocka Flame‘s Brick Squad label, now called 1017 Records, in 2013.

Earlier this year, Huey put out his new single “Pulled Away” featuring 410JAY.
