A reboot of ‘The Ren & Stimpy Show’ is finally happening

It looks like another reboot is heading to Comedy Central. It’s been confirmed that new episodes of The Ren & Stimpy Show are heading to the network.

According to reports, the ViacomCBS-owned network is bringing on a new creative team for a “reimagined take” on the animated series.

The Ren & Stimpy Show first aired on Nickelodeon back in 1991. Since its arrival, five seasons and over 100 episodes were released before the series’ end in 1996.

The series follows the adventures of Ren, a temperamental Chihuahua, and his sidekick, Stimpy. Ren & Stimpy launched as part of Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons push that also included both Rugrats and Doug. Starting out as a children’s program, the show eventually led to an adult spinoff called Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon. The spinoff aired on Spike, now Paramount Network, and six episodes were produced. However, only three ended up airing.

For the revival, Billy West is reportedly on board. West was the voice of Stimpy and also voiced Ren for three seasons. Several other original writers for the show are also expected to return. The Ren & Stimpy Show‘s original creator John Kricfalusi is not returning for the reboot. In 2018, he was accused of sexual misconduct and, therefore, is not involved in the project.

So far, most details about the revival are unknown. However, Chris McCarthy, ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group president, says the show is joining a slew of other reboots on Comedy Central.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,”McCarthy says. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South ParkBeavis and Butthead and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

The Ren & Stimpy reboot is joining other revivals that have been announced over the last few months. Back in June, we learned that the Daria spinoff Jodie is heading to Comedy Central. Jodie follows the life of Jodie Landon, Daria’s high school friend you may remember from the original series.

Then, in July, it was announced that new episodes of Beavis & Butthead are also heading to the network. For the reboot, the two teens will enter a “whole new Gen Z world.” They will take on current-day topics surrounding youth and adolescence.

Most recently, it was revealed that new Clone High episodes will air on MTV. Like the original show, the Clone High reboot will follow historical figures who have been cloned and placed in high school. The show’s characters include Abraham Lincoln, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, John F. Kennedy and more. Together, they face the normal trials and tribulations of teenage life and school.

As well, the SpongeBob SquarePants prequel Kamp Koral is hitting the CBS All Access streaming platform sometime next year.

No information regarding a release date or episode order for the Ren & Stimpy reboot is known at this time.
