‘Riverdale’ is getting a musical spinoff set in New York City

We’re deep into the third season of Riverdale, but it looks like there is another spinoff on the horizon. Following the recent release of Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, a new addition to the universe is on the way.

Titled Katy Keene, it will follow the storyline of the Archie Comics character with the same name. According to TV Line, the Riverdale spinoff will be a musical dramedy portraying Keene on her quest to become a triple threat on Broadway, in fashion and in music in New York City. While a cast listing and release date have not been made public, many are pulling for Katy Perry for the titular role.

Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced the show to the world on Twitter today.

Keene first appeared in Archie Comics in 1945 as a supporting character in Wilbur Comics. She received her own title series in 1949, and it ran for 12 years. The character was later revived in the 1980s in another series, Katy Keene Fashion Book Magazine, and made appearances in supporting roles in other comics. Now she’s headed to the small screen.

Other things happening in the Riverdale universe

This new series won’t be the only musical happening in the Riverdale universe. Let’s not forget that the recently announced Riverdale musical episode will be hitting the CW this spring.

Following last season’s Carrie musical episode, the upcoming episode will be inspired by the ’80s cult classic, Heathers.

“Last year, we had a blast doing Carrie,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says in a story with Entertainment Weekly. “This year, we wanted to honor another iconic teen movie. Heathers: The Musical is big fun, with great roles for the Riverdale kids.”

The Heathers-inspired episode airs March 20.
