SAG Awards announce 2021 winners—see the full list here

Like many awards shows over the past year, the 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are opting for a virtual event to announce the 2021 winners amid the coronavirus pandemic. With a shortened one-hour ceremony, the SAG Awards air April 4 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.

While the event is typically held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles—the iconic venue where My Chemical Romance also made their triumphant return in 2019—this year’s ceremony will be pre-taped without an official host. Instead, several actors will appear during the presentation including Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs who both announced the nominees on Instagram in February.

Unlike other awards shows, the SAG Awards are voted on by peers who are part of SAG-AFTRA, a labor union that represents more than 160,000 actors, dancers, DJs, singers, stunt performers and voiceover artists among others.

The annual process begins with the SAG Awards Motion Picture and Television Nominating Committees, which consists of 2,500 randomly drawn active SAG-AFTRA members. Following a review of the submissions, active SAG-AFTRA members are able to vote on the final nominees in 15 categories honoring film and television.

In addition to the abbreviated and pre-taped virtual ceremony, SAG-AFTRA has also scrapped the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. First awarded in 1962 to comedian Eddie Cantor, the honor predates the annual ceremony, which did not begin until 1995. Over the years, the award has been presented to Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Debbie Reynolds and more.

Ahead of the main event this year, People, Entertainment Weekly & TNT: Screen Actors Guild Awards Pre-Show is airing at 8 p.m. ET where the stunt category winners will be revealed. Disney’s Mulan and DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 are making history in the motion picture category as this marks the first year two female-led films have been nominated for stunts.

The blockbuster films are not alone in this record-breaking year as the late Chadwick Boseman has become the first person to be nominated four times in the film categories in one year. The beloved Marvel star has been recognized for his roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods, earning nominations for his leading role and supporting role respectively. Both movies are also nominated in Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture.

Boseman is nominated alongside Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Steven Yeun in the leading actor category. Ahmed’s nomination for his role as Ruben Stone in Sound Of Metalthe story of a metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing—marks his second at the SAG Awards.

Both Bill Camp and Anya Taylor-Joy are nominated for their leading roles in The Queen’s Gambit. Ozark, The Crown, Bridgerton, Dead To Me and Cobra Kai are also being recognized across various categories.
