Slothrust make going to the laundromat punk AF in their new video
Slothrust, the neo-grunge trio of vocalist/guitarist Leah Wellbaum, bassist Kyle Bann and drummer Will Gorin, are gearing up for the release of their fourth album, The Pact. In addition to writing and recording songs, they had to do some mundane stuff. Like doing their laundry.

Too bad we never have enough quarters to pull off the kind of madness Wellbaum gets up to in the clip for their second single, “Double Down.” Here, an ordinary trip to the laundromat finds our intrepid heroine beating her ennui by defying security guards, defiling other folks’ laundry, busting some robotic dance moves and kicking washing-machine lids like they were photographers at a Queens Of The Stone Age gig (too soon?). Oh, and did we mention the song is slinky, breezy and cool AF? There. Now we did.
“The video for ‘Double Down’ is really centered around levitation and magic,” says Wellbaum about the clip. “It’s about not knowing your own powers, and having them pour out of you in unexpected places. Otherworldly strength is going to manifest for people differently, and you’ve got to learn to harness it and let it feed you, not drain you.”
The song itself is a historical moment for Slothrust as it is Wellbaum’s first foray into co-writing. She teamed up with producer/writer Jon Buscema, who helped her find the sweet spot where pop vibes intersect with unbridled guitar mania.
“‘Double Down’ is the first co-write we’ve ever released, and I’m stoked on how it turned out,” Wellbaum enthuses. “Jon Buscema is a great collaborator who encouraged me to step into the lightness and express myself with pop sensibilities when often I gravitate toward the darkness.
“[The song] is about connecting with inner strength in a time where so many people are projecting pain onto each other,” Wellbaum explains. “As a queer artist, it feels anthemic to me. It’s about being able to rise high above the scum and see the beauty and power that exists in each of us—let’s help each other embrace that.”
Step lively, all you lovers: The day The Pact arrives into the world via the auspices of Dangerbird Records Sept. 14, (preorder it here), the band head out on tour. Schedule your laundry days accordingly, so Slothrust may pre-treat all your boredom right before they clean your clocks.
