Snickers backs Halloween date change with promise of free candy

There is a petition going around to permanently change Halloween to be moved permanently to the last Saturday of October, and now Snickers is getting in on it.

To backtrack, the Halloween & Costume Association started the petition with the goal to permanently move the celebration of Halloween to the Saturday, whether that falls on Oct. 31 or not.

Their goal is 150,000 signatures, and at the rate things are going, they’re more than likely going to exceed that goal.

As of press time, the petition has reached more than 111,000 signatures.

The petition states that moving the celebration would make for a “safer, longer, stress-free” trick-or-treat. It lists a few stats regarding the dangers of Halloween-related injuries and the safety of the spooky holiday.

A few of the facts listed include:

  • 3,800 Halloween-related injuries each year. Talk to your kids about safety before they head out!
  • 63% of children don’t carry a flashlight while they are tick-or-treating. Grab a clip-on light if they don’t want to carry one! Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween. Discuss safety, pre-plan a route, stay on sidewalks and use crosswalks
  • 65% of parents don’t discuss Halloween safety with their children. Talk with your kids and offer ways to ensure a fun and safe experience
  • 51% Of Millennials say Halloween is their favorite holiday, why cram it into 2 rushed evening weekday hours when it deserves a full day!?!

The petition is listed to go to the President of the United States upon meeting its signature goal. You can check out the petition, here.

Now, Snickers is getting in on the movement. The candy company has offered to give away 1 million candy bars to Americans if the date is changed. Now, that’s a lot of chocolate.

“Snickers is all in on celebration Halloween to the fullest,” Josh Olken, Snickers’s brand director, stated in a press release. “If the federal government makes this thing official, we’re offering up to one million free Snickers to America. No tricks, only treats.”

It looks like if you’re in favor of both the movie and delicious candy, you might want to tell your friends to sign the petition.
