With football season underway, now seems the perfect time to take a look at some of the best sports-related music videos in the alternative scene. Here’s our list of MVPs.

1. THE GARDEN – “CALIFORNIA HERE WE GO”

It’s a classic game of red vs. blue with a twist for this eclectic L.A. punk act consisting of twin brothers Wyatt and Fletcher Shears. The duo, which signed to Epitaph Records in 2015, dabble in grenades and heat-seeking homerun hits with their latest single.

2. FALL OUT BOY – “IRRESISTIBLE”

The first of three video installations for this song, the men of FOB take it to the court to duke it out with some pro players, while definitely dressing for the occasion (the ‘80s called, they want their shorts back). Nonetheless, we get a good laugh out of their efforts.

3. BAND OF SKULLS – “BRUISES”

Speaking of the ’80s: English indie rockers Band Of Skulls go retro with their slo-mo take on a bowling tournament. Things heat up when a troupe of luchadores in business suits challenge the reigning champs, The Pin Heads, but the top team still manages to pull through in the end.

4. PANIC! AT THE DISCO – “VICTORIOUS”

Is there anything P!ATD frontman Brendon Urie can’t do? Not only is he an amazing singer, actor and performer, but apparently he’s also a regular John Lawrence Sullivan. Both in and outside of the ring, he conquers all, from ex-girlfriends and helping the elderly to even losing a dodgeball match.

5. SUM 41 – “IN TOO DEEP”

Legendary Canadian pop-punks Sum 41 get physical by going off the deep end… literally. A parody of the classic Rodney Dangerfield flick Back to School, the band takes on a team of high school jocks in Speedos the only way they know how: through comedy and rock ’n’ roll.

6. GREEN DAY – “NICE GUYS FINISH LAST”

What do you get when you cross three Bay Area punks with a football field? Complete and utter chaos. With an obvious nod to the Green Bay Packers, the trio gear up for their biggest game to date – against their own fans! Watch as frontman Billie Joe Armstrong gets tackled and bassist Mike Dirnt dramatically sprains his ankle.

7. ALL TIME LOW – “COFFEE SHOP SOUNDTRACK”

In one of All Time Low’s earliest music videos, the boys from Baltimore are put up against a gymnastics team as they tuck, twist and tumble (seriously, lots of tumbling) their way to victory. They prove that teamwork makes the dream work. Take that, Final Five!

8. STATE CHAMPS – “HARD TO PLEASE”

And here comes the slap shot! This upstate NY pop punk outfit skates by and takes on a cheating opposing team to impress some (distracted) ladies. Things get aggressive when the two rival coaches duke it out in a fist fight, turning the game from frosty to downright bloody!

9. A DAY TO REMEMBER – “I’M MADE OF WAX, LARRY, WHAT ARE YOU MADE OF?”

In this single off their third album, Homesick, ADTR crush a squad of school children at their own game, complete with their own Rockstar Energy cheerleaders (gotta love product placement).

10. FOREVER THE SICKEST KIDS – “SHE LIKES (BITTERSWEET LOVE)”

You might ask yourself: How does one cheat at miniature golf? FTSK show us there are actually quite a few ways. The Dallas neon pop-punk act do everything in their capacity to thwart their competition: one another. Talk about “there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’”

11. VAMPIRE WEEKEND – “GIVING UP THE GUN”

As said in the famous Rocky saga, the toughest opponent you’re ever going to have to face is yourself. Indie pop act Vampire Weekend takes this word for word as their female protagonist serves against her clone. But first, she must get through a slew of other opponents, including a few celebrity cameos.

12. SET IT OFF – “UNCONTAINABLE”

Mixing traditional boxing with elements from Fight Club, the other members of SIO amp up lead singer Cody Carson as he takes on his opponent in an illegal underground match. It’s intense with a track as powerful to boot!
