Hear Dave Grohl step behind the drum kit for Stevie Nicks' new single

Stevie Nicks is back with her first new piece of music in 2020.

For the dreamy new single “Show Them The Way,” the Fleetwood Mac singer has joined forces with legendary drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Nicks is currently adapting Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” into a limited TV series. Although a lot of information about the project is still unknown, Nicks is apparently eying Harry Styles for the show’s starring role.

Now, it looks like Nicks is taking a brief break from the TV series to release new music. On Friday, she unveiled her dreamy new single “Show Them The Way.” As Nicks shares, the song is inspired by a dream she had back in 2008.

“One night I had a dream,” she says. “A dream that was so real that I was pretty sure it had happened. It was a cinematic story. It had a beginning, a middle and an end. Every detail, every color, every smile was there. I started writing the story the moment my eyes opened.”

The dream involved Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and John Lewis just before the 2008 presidential election. In the dream, Nicks says she was invited to play piano for the historical figures.

“I was invited to a party to play piano and sing a few songs. It was a benefit,” she says. “There were political people there. It felt really important. I was just the piano player, the voice, part of their dream.”

She wrote a poem about the dream the very next day. However, given the upcoming election and current political climate, she felt that now was a good time to share it.

“I wrote the poem the next day and the music the day after that,” she says. “I never recorded it until now. [I] felt that this was its time, its reason [and] understood what it meant then and what it means now. Please God, show them the way. Please God, on this day. Spirits all, give them the strength. Peace can come if you really want it. I think we’re just in time to save it.”

Grohl’s iconic drumming can be heard throughout “Show Them The Way,” but this isn’t the first time Grohl and Nicks have collaborated together. The two performed various Fleetwood Mac songs together back in 2013. As well, Nicks dedicated a performance of “Landslide” to Grohl after he broke his leg in 2015.

Nicks has also teamed up with another familiar face for “Show Them The Way.” Legendary Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe directed the single’s powerful video.

“Within hours of hearing the song we were already putting together the video about her ‘dream about a dream,'” Crowe says. ‘Show Them The Way’ began as a poem, and grew into one of her strongest musical tracks. It feels like both a gift and a fever dream about hope and promise. We finished the video on the full-moon with a whole lot of passion and excitement about immediately sharing it with the world right now.”

All of the proceeds from “Show Them The Way” are benefitting MusiCares. As well, the Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold The Concert film is scheduled to be released in cinemas worldwide on Oct. 21 and 25. Tickets for the film are available to purchase here.
