Contaminated tattoo inks recalled by FDA after inspection

The Food And Drug Administration has recently issued a recall concerning six different tattoo inks that have been found to contain bacterial contamination.

According to a news release, the FDA say that microorganisms were found in Scalpaink, Solid Ink and Dynamic Color inks. Since their discovery, they have been working with the manufacturers to appropriately remove the products from the shelves.

The FDA became aware of the contaminations after they performed their 2018-2019 routine “inspections of distributors and manufacturers.” Additionally, they reviewed surveys of the products and their respective “microbiological analysis.”

“The FDA is alerting consumers, tattoo artists, and retailers of the potential for serious injury from [the] use of tattoo inks that are contaminated with bacteria,” they say. “Tattoo inks contaminated with microorganisms can cause infections and lead to serious health injuries when injected into the skin during a tattooing procedure since there is an increased risk of infection any time the skin barrier is broken.”

Following the alert, the FDA explained the potential implications of tattooing with contaminated ink, including high-risk of infection. Additionally, they described potential symptoms, noting that they can often be confused with other things, such as allergic reactions, making ink-related infections easy to misdiagnose.

“Commonly reported symptoms of tattoo-ink-associated infections include the appearance of rashes or lesions consisting of red papules in areas where the contaminated ink has been applied,” the FDA says. “Some tattoo infections can result in permanent scarring.”
