Gerard Way covers ’60s classic in new ‘The Umbrella Academy’ trailer—UPDATED

UPDATE: JAN. 24, 12:46 P.M. EST

Earlier today, The Umbrella Academy unleashed its first official trailer. It was clear the comic’s creator Gerard Way offered up the soundtrack via a Simon & Garfunkel cover, but we’re now finding out he recruited drummer Jarrod Alexander and former My Chemical Romance bandmate Ray Toro.

“This is surreal and exciting and just wild,” Way writes in an Instagram post. “Getting to cover ‘[A] Hazy Shade Of Winter’ for this with Ray Toro and Jarrod Alexander was so much fun. Can’t wait for you all to see the show when it comes out February 15th on Netflix. The cast and crew and Steve Blackman the showrunner did a spectacular job with our baby.”

Way then posted the full track to Spotify shortly after, which you can check out here.

Way also recently worked with both musicians on some new solo material. He teamed up with Alexander on most recent single, “Dasher,” which also features the Regrettes Lydia Night, in December.

Meanwhile, Toro appears on Way’s previous single, “Getting Down The Germs,” which debuted in November.

We’re weeks away from the debut of The Umbrella Academy, the Netflix series based upon Gerard Way’s comic series of the same name.

As if we weren’t already excited enough, Way has offered up his vocal talents on the latest trailer to hit the internet.

Way covers Simon & Garfunkel’s “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” peppered in between some high-energy footage from the upcoming debut.

The contribution makes sense as Way recently discussed that he was covering something for the series during a panel at Brazil’s CCXP in December.

Reddit u/3raz3t uncovered the clip earlier this month.

“I have offered my services, you know, to say that I’m available for what they need,” Way explains. “I have a studio now. I can’t say which song that I did for them, but I did a song that’s very integral to one of the episodes, and it’s a cover song, but I can’t say which one it is yet. So they asked me to do a song, and I did one song.”

Gerard Way on the future of The Umbrella Academy

Way and Gabriel Bá recently sat down for an interview with Collider about their forthcoming Netflix show. The pair discussed their hopes for the show’s longevity and what fans can expect to see on their screens.

When prompted about the show’s long-term direction, Way said that Netflix “wants to know where it’s heading.”

Way says that at the beginning of the comic-to-screen process, he made showrunner Steve Blackman and the rest of the writers an 18-page document that summarized where he thinks the series will go. The document even included projected ideas for comics that hadn’t even been written yet. Way says that by the end, he hopes to have eight completed graphic novels.

“I gave them the blueprint for what happens,” Way says. “Because you do want to see certain things in there for future series. The hope is that it’s a success and you get to do a lot more of these. They’re always curious about what Gabriel and I are doing next.”

Additionally, Way and Bá discussed what fans should be most excited about in the new series.

“I think what we wanted to get accomplished in the move was to really see these characters expanded and the story told in longer-form,” Way says. “So you could get more out of it and spend more time with the characters.

“My favorite things about the show are that they keep the weird ideas,” Way continues.“They’re still there. There are some really heavy concepts to get your head around, and the show really stays true to that.”

The Umbrella Academy hits Netflix Feb. 15. Check out the full trailer below.
