Gerard Way pitched another TV show before ‘The Umbrella Academy'
By now, we all know and love the Netflix adaptation of Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy. But what you might not know is that the show was not the first time the My Chemical Romance frontman attempted to pitch a show.
That’s right, Way attempted to create a show with Joe Boyle back in 2001. That was the same year MCR started it all.

The show was called The Breakfast Monkey. It was supposed to be about a Scandinavian monkey who was also a chef. He shared the importance of breakfast to viewers and encouraged them to never miss the most important meal of the day.
Way attempted to pitch the show to Cartoon Network, but it was never picked up because they said it was too similar to Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
You can actually watch the pitch video below and see what could have came to be. But who knows, if Way’s TV career started nearly 18 years ago, MCR might have never existed.

Way recently revealed that he wrote much of The Umbrella Academy while on the road. Additionally, he explained the wholesome concept behind the series.
The series also paid homage to the comic’s writer by including an adorable Easter egg during its first episode.
Also, Way recently said that the characters in the series are inspired by the “dysfunctional family dynamic” of the MCR members, which totally made sense to us.
