Universal Studios cancels Halloween Horror Nights for first time in 30 years

Coronavirus has forced the cancelations of various events worldwide. Now, it looks like the pandemic has impacted another event. It has been announced that Universal Studio‘s Halloween Horror Nights won’t be taking place in 2020.

This marks the first time in 30 years that Halloween Horror Nights is not happening.

On Friday, Universal Studios announced that Halloween Horror Nights is canceled. The events are no longer taking place in California or Florida this year.

The Halloween-themed events have become a popular staple at Universal’s parks. For the events, however, guests have to pack into tight spaces. This aspect of Halloween Horror Nights challenges the safety of social distancing. Due to this, the company has decided to cancel this year’s events.

The news comes as the U.S. continues to see spikes in cases in various parts of the country. Flordia recently topped 400,000 coronavirus cases this past week. As well, California’s Universal Studios Hollywood has yet to reopen since the pandemic shutdown.

“Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood have made the difficult decision to not hold Halloween Horror Nights events this year,” the statement says. “[Florida’s] Orlando Resort will be focusing exclusively on operating its theme parks for daytime guests, using the enhanced health and safety procedures already in place. [California’s] Universal Studios Hollywood continues to face ongoing business restrictions and uncertainty around its opening timeframe.”

Universal Studios further shares that it’s planning to bring back the events in 2021.

“We know this decision will disappoint our fans and guests,” the statement continues. “We are disappointed, too. But look forward to creating an amazing event in 2021.”

At this time, both states are facing different lockdown restrictions. This aspect greatly impacts the reopening of the states’ theme parks. In June, Disneyland further delayed its July 17 reopening. However, Florida’s Disney World Resort reopened all four of its parks. Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios all reopened on schedule.
