Velveeta awards Cursive frontman with edible "gold" record

No, you didn't read that headline wrong—processed-cheese maker Velveeta recently got into a series of Twitter discussions with Cursive frontman Tim Kasher regarding his appreciation of their Shells & Cheese product, and as a result, the company created a “gold” record plaque for Cursive's Domestica, originally released in 2000 on Saddle Creek. The Chicago Reader reports that the gold record is edible but does not need to be refrigerated, because “Velveeta's futuristic chemistry allows it to stay fresh without chilling.” So there's that.

It should be noted that to be certified gold by the RIAA, at least 500,000 copies of an album must have been shipped to retail outlets. As Kasher mentioned in his tweet, his labelmate Bright Eyes recently went gold for 2005's I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. We couldn't get Domestica's current SoundScan total at presstime, but it's likely still a little shy of the actual milestone, but hey—when the world comes to an end and we're thrown into total apocalypse, guess who is gonna have at least one meal hanging on their wall within arm's reach? Not Conor Oberst, that's for sure. (UPDATE: We have confirmed that Domestica's SoundScan total is currently hovering around 57,000. We are officially in favor of establishing a new, “liquid gold” certification level there.)

In less cheesy news, Kasher is currently working on a new solo album, which will be released later this year most likely on CD, vinyl and digitally—and possibly bundled in with a 1 lb. brick of Velveeta. At this point, we won't rule anything out. Additionally, Cursive have a slate of Midwestern shows alongside Digital Leather scheduled for this June; dates below:
