Weezer's "Africa" cover is their biggest hit in a decade

It looks like Weezer are really bringing home the bacon with their recent cover of Toto‘s ’80s hit “Africa,” the unlikely rendition the outcome of a months-long Twitter campaign from fan account @WeezerAfrica. Revisit the cover tune below.

As reported by Pitchfork, Weezer’s “Africa” lands at No. 89 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, giving the veteran Los Angeles rock band their highest-charting song since 2009’s “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To,” which hit No. 91.

Weezer surprise-dropped their “Africa” cover late last month, ostensibly answering to — and ending — the somewhat mysterious fan campaign #WeezerCoverAfrica that requested the “Island In The Sun” rockers tackle the 1982 smash.

Frontman Rivers Cuomo and company played the part of the internet troll first, however. Weezer initially released a cover of Toto’s “Rosanna” online just before sharing “Africa,” effectively spoofing the #WeezerCoverAfrica movement.

And a new album from the Weez is reportedly coming soon: the much-rumored “The Black Album,” as noted by SPIN. Following 2017’s Pacific Daydream, frontman Rivers Cuomo says the group made the new one while finishing the last.

“This other album kind of materialized,” Cuomo told Double J. “I had two folders on my Dropbox: one was ‘The Black Album,’ and it didn’t get filled as quickly as this other folder. […] So, we put a name on it, Pacific Daydream, and put that out first.”
