She’s unveiled a new rendition of the Smashing Pumpkins‘ “Drown,” giving it a stylized electro feel, with production from her regular collaborator Jupiter Keyes.

“I believe in the power of art to transcend betrayal and disappointment,” Glass says. “‘Drown’ is not just a cover; it’s a testament to resilience and artistic integrity. This track was created after we were asked to be a part of an exciting compilation that ultimately didn’t end up happening. But I didn’t want that to stop us from sharing our interpretation of this iconic Smashing Pumpkins track. This release is a declaration of autonomy and a reminder that true artistry cannot be stifled by broken promises.”

According to a press release, Glass has a “new project” coming out in the summer, too, so stay tuned for more on that. In the meantime, listen to her cover of “Drown” below.

Fan poll: 5 greatest the Smashing Pumpkins songs of all time https://www.altpress.com/fan-poll-best-the-smashing-pumpkins-songs/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 18:07:12 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/?p=216615 From moody ballads to feverish rock anthems, unexpected contradiction has always been at the heart of the Smashing Pumpkins story. Formed in the underground alternative scene of Chicago in 1988, the Billy Corgan-fronted band broke through to mainstream success with their sophomore album Siamese Dream (1993), and once again with the hit-filled Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995).

With Corgan at the helm as a tormented songwriting force, over the years the group became known for their poetic lyricism that captivated rock fans of all ages, and have since remained beloved for their quirky blend of garage rock, heavy metal, and new wave.

While the Smashing Pumpkins members have come and gone since its height of stardom, the group seem to have no plans of slowing down. With their 2023 World is a Vampire tour and 2020 album Cyr, the band’s 11th album, it’s clear that the Smashing Pumpkins are anything but a spent force.

Spanning decades, genres, and a revolving door of band members, their immense catalog is now close to 400 songs deep. Ranking the greatest tracks of a behemoth like the Smashing Pumpkins is almost an impossible task. But our readers were up for the assignment. Here are the top five fan picks.

5. “Cherub Rock”

Sarcastic and spiteful, “Cherub Rock” captures a critical moment in time for the alt-rock band within just five minutes of play time. Written by Billy Corgan at a time when the band were setting their sights on arena-rock superstardom, the song tackles Corgan’s contentious relationship with the music industry. Bolstered by swooning riffs, thick waves of distortion, and clever, seething lyrics that have proved to be timelessly catchy, “Cherub Rock” is the ultimate “f*ck you” to the phonies, critics, and industry hanger-ons that always had something to say. Years later and this is still one of the best album openers of all time, setting the tone of Siamese Dream with the band’s silky-smooth guitar prowess and memorable refrains.

4. “Disarm”

Billy Corgan’s lyrical finesse will forever shine brightest on a ballad. There are several variations on “Disarm” — the string arrangement on Siamese Dream, the stripped-down acoustic recording, and a metal version they perform live — but no matter the rendition, Corgan’s heart-wrenching lyrics tear through the track like ignited gasoline. Reflecting on his traumatic childhood, Corgan’s haunting sorrow is seared into the memories of anyone who grew up listening to Siamese Dream. Delivering both a commercial success and a deeply personal tribute, “Disarm,” with its iconic bells, will persist as one of the band’s most poignant songs.

3. “1979

This nostalgic pop-hit is easily one of the most recognizable songs from the Smashing Pumpkins extensive catalog. Breezy, wistful, and undeniably catchy, “1979” encapsulates suburban youth culture in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. The seminal music video, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, is a visceral depiction of teenage angst with reminiscent shots of basement parties, reckless cruising, and toilet-papered houses. Released as the second single from their 1995 album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the track builds off their churning guitar-heavy rock sound with processors, drum pads, and synthetic instrumentation. The result is a bouncy new wave tune that is a perfect combination of carefree and longing.

2. “Tonight, Tonight

“Tonight, Tonight” is one of Corgan’s most optimistic songs, a rallying cry against cynicism set to a sweeping string arrangement recorded by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The track’s grandiose orchestral composition is stunning, yet it’s in the quiet moments that “Tonight, Tonight” really comes to life. Corgan’s melancholic reflection on the passage of time is a necessary break from the upbeat hopefulness that pumps through the rest of the song. The Georges Méliès-inspired music video is a theatrical trip into the silent film “A Trip to the Moon” with full-out costumes and whimsical set design, showcasing the magic of their genre-defying sound.

1. “Mayonaise”

“Mayonaise” – officially spelled incorrectly – is a longtime fan favorite. And it’s easy to understand why. With an intoxicating melody and thrashing, moody guitar riffs, the track epitomizes the brilliance of the Smashing Pumpkins — a band that consistently played with contradictions. The balance struck between industrial noise and polished rock is best exemplified within these six minutes. In drawing together all the many endearing qualities of the band, “Mayonaise” explodes with complexity, vulnerability, and ingenious songwriting that has endured decades later.

See the Smashing Pumpkins’ otherworldly new video for “Spellbinding” https://www.altpress.com/the-smashing-pumpkins-spellbinding-video-watch/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 23:53:16 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/the-smashing-pumpkins-spellbinding-video-watch/ Ahead of the beloved band’s North American THE WORLD IS A VAMPIRE tour, the Smashing Pumpkins have graced us with a new video for “Spellbinding,” the dark, addictive track off the latest trilogy album, ATUM. Rather than merely setting an aptly ominous scene for the music video, director Kevin Kerslake has meticulously crafted an entirely new, digital world for the Smashing Pumpkins, where each band member exists as a digital avatar of themself. This fantastical, eerie universe plays with themes drawn from video games, and reflects the diligence and narrative structure that the Smashing Pumpkins have put into each of their projects.

Written and produced by frontman Billy Corgan, ATUM is a 33-track album that plays as three acts and is the audio sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/Machine of God. As echoed by the music video below, each project has offered a technically complex, unshakeable deep dive that talks to technology, alternate universes, and intergalactic experiences, ideologies, and emotions — be it through the lyricism or soundscape alone. And today, we are able to enter that world in a new way.

Speaking on the making of this video, Kerslake shares: “We adopted a virtual production model for the ‘Spellbinding’ video, creating it entirely in the gaming engine; unreal, with digital avatars moving through fantastical worlds that play a key role in the ATUM storyline. Billy and I share an interest in the fusion of old-world elements with state-of-the-art technology, and all the stars aligned on this video to break new ground.”

Catch the Smashing Pumpkins on tour this summer, starting July 28, with support from Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots, and Rival Sons.

The Smashing Pumpkins albums ranked: From worst to best https://www.altpress.com/the-smashing-pumpkins-albums-ranked/ Tue, 16 May 2023 18:00:52 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/the-smashing-pumpkins-albums-ranked-2/ The Smashing Pumpkins are a complex band. They’ve written some of the greatest alternative-rock songs of all time, but they’ve constantly refused to play by the rules. Tracks like “Tonight, Tonight,” “1979,” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” are as important to rock as anthems from their peers in Nirvana, Weezer, Pearl Jam, and Green Day, but ambitious double albums often acted as a roadblock, stopping casual fans from becoming die-hards.

Billy Corgan and co. never let that put them off, though — their back catalog being a series of ambitious, theatrical, occasionally bizarre albums that cover everything from urgent rock ‘n’ roll to freewheeling jazz.

They’ve also gone through many iterations. Original bassist D’arcy Wretzky left the group in 1999 before the entire band broke up in 2000; then in 2006, Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin reunited, only for Chamberlain to leave again in 2009 while Corgan kept Smashing Pumpkins going. Finally in 2018, Chamberlain officially rejoined, along with guitarist James Iha, before the release of a new album and setting out on tour.

Most recently, the band released their latest album Atum, which acts as a sequel to 1995’s double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God. See, we told you it was complex. To help make things easier, we ranked the Smashing Pumpkins’ complete discography.

The Smashing Pumpkins are going on tour with Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots, more https://www.altpress.com/smashing-pumpkins-2023-tour-dates/ Tue, 28 Mar 2023 19:34:30 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/smashing-pumpkins-2023-tour-dates/ The Smashing Pumpkins are hitting the road. The alternative-rock icons aren’t just going on any tour, though — they’re launching “a true alternative festival” of a live show.

Today, the Smashing Pumpkins announced a large slate of upcoming live dates for the World is a Vampire Tour. The ’90s favorites are bringing a handful of guests on tour, including Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots, and Rival Sons, as well as wrestlers in the National Wrestling Alliance, who are set to compete a handful of dates. The tour is set to kick off in Las Vegas, Nevada in late July and run throughout August in much of North America.

Of the tour, frontman Billy Corgan said in a press release, “I grew up in a world where I needed to know bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Cure existed, it meant there was a place for people like me to hang out and belong. That’s what the World Is A Vampire is about. Bringing back that sense of community. If you don’t fit in, you belong here. It’s about having a shared experience and respecting others, but ultimately having fun. A true alternative festival, where all the self-proclaimed weirdos and outsiders of the world can get together and have a party.”

The tour comes shortly after the release of the third and final installment of their 12th studio album ATUM, which is due out May 5. Aside from a handful of festival performances, the World is a Vampire Tour marks the band’s latest tour since 2018 and 2019. So, in addition to the classics, you can likely expect them to play tracks off both ATUM and their 2020 album Cyr, which they have yet to take on the road.

The pre-sale for the Smashing Pumpkins’ 2023 tour begins today, Mar. 28 at 12pm local time and lasts until Thursday, Mar. 30 at 10pm local time. The general on-sale will then kick off Friday, Mar. 31 at 10am local time. You can find more details here and see the full list of dates below.

Meet Hannah Judge of fanclubwallet, your new favorite indie-pop act https://www.altpress.com/fanclubwallet-hannah-judge-interview/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 23:35:41 +0000 https://www.altpress.com/fanclubwallet-hannah-judge-interview/ Welcome to AP&R, where we highlight rising artists who will soon become your new favorite.

Are you a sucker for sad indie-pop? If you can’t stop listening to Lucy Dacus reflect on relationships and love Clairo’s gentle musings, Canada’s finest, fanclubwallet, needs to make her way onto your playlist.

As fanclubwallet, named after a Dennis the Menace wallet that belonged to her father, Hannah Judge shares vulnerable musings about intense relationships and the difficulties of touring with a chronic illness. The Ottawa-based singer-songwriter dropped out of university and moved home, pivoting from making comics and band photography to creating music.

“I actually dropped out of school to pursue making comics,” Judge tells Alternative Press. Originally, she didn’t intend to make music at all. Instead, Judge reveals, “I wanted to write a graphic novel and I wasn’t enjoying uni anymore, so I started making music on the side and found I actually liked it a lot more!”

It was only during the pandemic that Judge began pursuing music professionally. She started playing the guitar and ukulele, and eventually made music at home on an iPhone with GarageBand. The inception of fanclubwallet then may have been when she began using a children’s keyboard to make uncomplicated tracks. And while it’s now more complex, it hasn’t lost its innocence.

The Canadian cartoonist often collaborates with friends on dreamy tunes and works closely with her grade-school-best-friend-turned-producer Michael Watson. “Songs usually start with me alone in my bedroom, and then I bring them to Michael or get input from friends,” Judge says, calling the process “pretty quick” and joking that she has “a very short attention span.”

Judge is open about making music while dealing with Crohn’s disease, which she was diagnosed with at 16, the summer before 11th grade. On social media, she shares everything from what it’s like crafting songs in bed during a flare-up to the medications she takes and the reactions to them, writing in an Instagram story, “It makes recording hard sometimes because I can’t always get out of bed but luckily we’ve got long headphone cords and heating pads.”

The mellow musician has made friends with people online through their open discussion about Chron’s, calling the community “really cool” and sharing, “When I was younger I didn’t know anyone else with Crohn’s, so I feel really lucky that I can be open about it online and hopefully help some people out.”

It hasn’t stopped 23-year-old Judge, though, who released her debut album You Have Got To Be Kidding Me in May of this year. The freshman offering is chock-full of thoughtful bops — perfect for fans of quietly emotional indie-pop that makes them think. Judge cites Tegan and Sara, The Smashing Pumpkins, Teen Suicide, Sleigh Bells, and Rilo Kiley all as inspirations for the album.

One notable cover is a hot take on the Talking Heads mega-hit “This Must Be The Place,” giving frontman David Byrne a run for his money with her own version of the alt-rock anthem. Judge’s version is so inventive you might momentarily forget the song wasn’t actually written by her. She calls herself a “huge Talking Heads fan,” and wants to cover other classic songs, naming the rock band’s “Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town” and “Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield as favorites.

In June, Judge wrapped up what she called her “longest tour ever” on Instagram, opening Chvrches. Judge raves the band is “so, so nice” and that “their team was lovely to work with,” and says she was able to “connect with new fans” as the opening act for the Scottish alt-pop band.

Now, Judge is focused on writing more music and taking a short break from touring. Coming up, the singer says she’s “looking forward to taking things at my own pace, and hopefully experimenting with sound more.” With influences like Tegan & Sara and Jenny Lewis, fanclubwallet’s sound could take her anywhere.

On the “You Have Got To Be Kidding Me” title track, Judge sings, “Can I catch a break?” but it looks like she might be on her way to a big break after all.

Get a taste of the Smashing Pumpkins’ 33-track rock opera with their ambitious new single “Beguiled”

The Smashing Pumpkins have released “Beguiled” ahead of their upcoming three-act rock opera, Atum. “Beguiled” is just one of 33 tracks on the new record, which also serve as a companion piece to the band’s classic concept albums Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (1995) and Machina/The Machines Of God (2020). With something as ambitious as a rock opera, the Pumpkins are sure to provide an epic sonic journey with their 12th studio album, and “Beguiled” showcases a more prog-metal-inspired sound that’s a striking but welcome deviation from their alt-rock roots. Fans can witness the live debut of “Beguiled” this Friday, Sept. 23, as the band are set to perform on The Tonight Showing Starring Jimmy Fallon—Alessandro DeCaro

White Lung are giving us one final album, Premonition

While we’re gutted to learn that White Lung’s long-awaited fifth studio album Premonition will be their last, the band seem ready to go out with a bang. Sharing two new singles, “Date Night” and “Tomorrow,” White Lung have reemerged as energized as ever with their signature blend of blast beats, angular guitar riffs and Mish Barber-Way’s dynamic vocal style. Additionally, the band have shared visually stimulating and abstract videos for both singles, which were directed by close friend and visual collaborator Justin Gradin. Premonition, which arrives Dec. 2, finds the band rejecting and making peace with the idea of nihilism while also shedding light on the events that have transpired not only within society over the last five years but also within their personal lives, including the birth of Barber-Way’s two children. —Alessandro DeCaro
