Taylor Swift reportedly sued over "Shake It Off" lyrics

Taylor Swift might be trying to leave her previous eras behind (as made obvious by her “Look What You Made Me Do” music video…), but it doesn’t look like she’ll be doing that too easily.

Swift has reportedly been hit by a copyright lawsuit from songwriters Sean Hall and Nate Butler over her 2014 bop “Shake It Off,” according to TMZ. They are reporting that the two are suing because she borrows too much from 2001’s “Playas Gon’ Play,” which they had written for R&B act 3LW.

The main lyrics in question in Swift’s song are:

Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off

3LW’s chorus features similar lrics:

Playas, they gonna play
And haters, they gonna hate
Ballers, they gonna ball
Shot callers, they gonna call

While the songs aren’t super sonically similar, there is similarity between the players and the haters—and the two want 20 percent songwriting credit on Swift’s track.

Swift’s team has reached out to TMZ to deny the accusations, saying Hall and Butler do not actually have a case.

“This is a ridiculous claim and nothing more than a money grab. The law is simple and clear. They do not have a case.”

Butler has worked with the likes of the Backstreet Boys, JoJo, The Cheetah Girls Aaron Carter and more. According to TMZ, Hall has worked with the likes of Justin Bieber, Pink and Maroon 5.
