Tegan And Sara, Lights, Metric, more join indie-rock video game

Tegan And Sara, Lights, Metric, Fucked Up, Metz, Cadence Weapon, Austra, July Talk and more will participate in the new indie music game, LOUD on Planet X. The musicians will provide both music and avatars for the game, which also features original scores from Fucked Up's Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco and Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning and Justin Peroff, Rolling Stone reports.

According to RS, the game “combines tower defense and tap games with some of Toronto's best acts. The premise of the game involves the player choosing one of 12 musical acts who, upon completing a Level 1 hometown gig, go through a portal to a foreign planet. There, they need to defend their stage against marauding hordes of aliens by tapping to the music and using an assortment of weapons, including speakers, strobe lights, fog machines and bouncers.”

“We're trying to do a lot of stuff to capture the individual personality of the bands, too,” game developer Alex Jansen told Polygon. “It's very different than just licensing the music and walking away. We're really looking at much higher integration, and with the bands directly.”

Here's the game developer's description:

Choose from a cross-section of top current indie music artists, then defend your stage from hordes of quirky aliens by tapping to the music and using a fun assortment of makeshift weapons like speakers, strobe lights, fog machines, amplifiers, bouncers and custom special attacks! LOUD on Planet X is an exciting new indie alternative to Rock Band or Guitar Hero with a splash of Plants vs Zombies – a new hybrid of rhythm game and classic shooter with tower defence elements.
