Netflix reveals new ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Leatherface mask
Among other details, the new visual reveals a newly updated mask for horror legend Leatherface. The character’s iconic appearance has received an update, matching the new movie’s updated tone and imagery.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a direct sequel to the original 1974 film, mostly skipping over the seven sequels that followed. The film was directed by David Blue Garcia and shot in Bulgaria in 2020.
“We wanted to come up with a very simple premise [with] a powerful domino effect,” Álvarez says. “Everything is set up in the right place – all you have to do is push the first domino and everything will happen effortlessly.”
While the trailer doesn’t reveal the domino effect in question, it does show off the new characters and updated visuals.
Olwen Fouéré appears in the film as Sally Hardesty, replacing the original’s final girl Marilyn Burns. An adult Hardesty returns in the new trailer, seeking revenge against her old adversary.
Meanwhile, Leatherface will be played by Mark Burnham, replacing the late Gunnar Hansen, who made the original role. Fittingly, the character has also been updated, showing his own signs of aging.
Álvarez also spoke about the ways the new film connected to the original.
“When I say ‘direct sequel,’ I wouldn’t say it skips everything,” Álvarez explains. “When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie – it’s so wacky and of its time. But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it’s up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen.”
Álvarez also added that Leatherface has “been in hiding for a long, long time, trying to be a good person.” However, the arrival of new people to the town serves to “awaken the giant.”
