The 1975 originally debuted the track “Guys” when they were touring UK arenas back in February. Now, we get to officially hear its recording, which according to frontman Matty Healy, was one of the last for the record. Healy also discusses the sentimentality of “Guys” and its divergence from the normal love song about a significant other. This one is for friendship “Shout out to the homies,” Healy jokes.

“I really love this song. It’s really, I don’t know. It’s really nice. It is really quite earnest. It’s quite real,” Healy says to Zane Lowe on Apple Music.  I don’t really look back very much either in that regard, like properly sentimentally. So it was nice to do that. Yeah, it came quite late in the record and it was just quite easy because in its simplicity it was easily executable and it’s quite an obvious emotional quality to it.”

“It came quite easy that song, but I think I just wanted to write a love letter to friendship, as opposed to every love song being about our romantic relationships. I think that our friendships are obviously our most formative relationships. So shout out to the homies.”

“Guys” Lyrics

I was missing the guys (I was missing the guys)
In my rented apartment
You would think I’d have realised
But I didn’t for quite sometime
Started wetting my eyes (Started wetting my eyes)
‘Cause I’m soft in that department
Right then I realised
You’re the love of my life

The moment that you took my hand
Was the best thing that ever happened, yeah
The moment that we started a band
Was the best thing that ever happened
And I wish that we could do it again
It was the best thing that ever happened to me

It was the best thing that ever happened to me
It was the best thing that ever happened

I took a zoot outside
In my coat’s secret compartment
I hear a song and start to cry
Pretend it’s smoke that’s in my eye
I don’t know why I’m surprised
‘Cause we all shared one apartment
Man, they were the golden times
They were the best of my life

The moment that you took my hand (The moment that you took my hand)
Was the best thing that ever happened, yeah
The moment that we started a band (The moment that we started a band)
Was the best thing that ever happened
Oh, the first time we went to Japan (The first time we went to Japan)
Was the best thing that ever happened (The best thing)
And I wish that we could do it again
You guys are the best thing that ever happened to me
You guys are the best thing that ever happened to me

Healy reiterated the song’s importance and also what it means to be human.

It’s that whole thing of sincerity is scary that I’ve been going on a prolonged time. I think that it’s very, very easy to be sardonic or ironic in the face of things that are really sentimental or that make us feel exposed or potentially make us feel embarrassed or to be naive and to be soppy and sentimental is to be really human.”

“Do you know what I mean? And to cut those bits out, to throw in those ideas with just irony and taking the Mick all the time can be quite exhausting. I think that there is a lot of jokes and winks and this and that on my records. And I think that this song was a bit of an antidote for all of that. It’s just nice to have one moment of pure, genuine soppy, naive sentimentality. That is a massive ingredient in being a person.”
