The Dirty Nil unleash noisy new song, “Pain Of Infinity”—listen

A few years ago, more than one AP editor got caught up in the air-guitar rapture of “Fuckin’ Up Young,” the majestic loser-anthem from full-on rock ’n’ roll dudes the Dirty Nil. After witnessing the Ontario-based trio on their stint touring with Against Me!, the deal was sealed and it’s official: We now completely forgive Canada for Nickelback.

The Dirty Nil—vocalist/guitarist Luke Bentham, bassist Ross Miller and drummer Kyle Fisher—have racked up both indie-cred points (touring with folks such as AM! and the Menzingers, co-releasing the singles compilation Minimum R&B with Fat Wreck in America) and high-profile music-biz notices (opening for the Who, receiving a Juno award for Breakthrough Band Of 2017).

Too noisy and attitude-laden for music directors at radio and graybeards praying for one more Aerosmith tour, and way too coarse for devotees of sterile Pro Tooled pop punk, the Dirty Nil are the bastard sons emerging from a beer-fueled Petri dish teeming with Seattle grunge and drunken Midwest alt-rock.

Which is why we are beyond stoked to premiere “Pain Of Infinity,” the second single from the band’s upcoming album, Master Volume. Slated for release Sept. 14 on Dine Alone and produced by Seattle indie legend John Goodmanson (Death Cab For Cutie, Blood Brothers, Bikini Kill), the record sports that trifecta of wonderfulness (read: young, loud, snotty) that eradicates everything that’s shitty in the world. Well, actually, it doesn’t, but “Pain Of Infinity” still reminds us how great it is to still be around to flip off the world’s garbage people.

“My favorite songs always come together the fastest, without any premeditation or intent,” says Bentham about the song which is a fan-favorite about a destroyed relationship. “When you open up your mouth and yell along to a slashing guitar, and something so stupid that it’s special comes out. Top-grade catharsis with a saccharine coating; this is the feeling I live for.

“For the last year, every show we’ve played has been peppered with requests for this song. Considering that we have not released it in any form prior to today, that’s been nice. However, we’re very happy to give the kids what they want. Children of the world: crank it up and cheers.”

One loudmouth here thinks Master Volume is better than Nevermind, but that’s like saying pistachios were better in the days when they were immersed in red dye. (Another wise guy here thinks no one reading this remembers red-stained nuts or Nirvana, but knows the Nil are completely righteous in the most furious of ways.)

Check out “Pain Of Infinity” below, and take a peep at the tracklisting and cover art. And one more thing: The Dirty Nil tour North America in late October and if you’re not there, you’re nowhere.
