The internet has some thoughts on the rock nominations at the 2020 AMAs

On Monday, the American Music Awards unveiled all of the nominations for its upcoming 2020 ceremony on Nov. 22. However, the list of artists is catching the internet’s attention for some interesting reasons.

The AMAs have not only combined rock and pop artists into the same categories, but the alternative rock nominations are sparking a lot of thoughts online.

Billie Eilish managed to snag a few nominations at the 2020 American Music Awards. Although she is nominated alongside BTS and Ariana Grande for Favorite Social Artist, she was shut out of the Artist Of The Year category. As well, she earned a nom for Favorite Alternative Rock Artist which has caused some confusion online.

Eilish is nominated alongside twenty one pilots and Tame Impala in the category, but many believe that Eilish’s music isn’t “alternative rock.”

As well, others argue that there are plenty of artists that could’ve earned nominations in the category including Evanescence and Machine Gun Kelly.

Eilish actually took home the Favorite Alternative Rock Artist award at the 2019 American Music Awards. She beat out Imagine Dragons and Panic! At The Disco for the award. So, this isn’t the first time Eilish has been placed in this particular category.

Since the 2020 AMAs pop and rock nominations are combined, a lot of rock artists are excluded from these categories. For example, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa are nominated for Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist, three performers who are widely considered to be pop.

As well, the Favorite Pop/Rock Album category features no rock artists. Swift’s folklore, Harry StylesFine Line and the Weeknd‘s After Hours are the only releases nominated in this AMAs category.

The 2020 American Music Awards is set to take place live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 22 at 8 P.M. ET/PT on ABC.
