the maine interview

The Maine’s John O’Callaghan on fatherhood, 8123 Fest and the last time he cried

Lead vocalist John O’Callaghan is currently on tour with the Maine, in support of their recent album XOXO: From Love & Anxiety In Real Time. He told us 10 of his “lasts” and reflects on how life as a father has transformed his life into being completely “baby-centric.”

THE LAST SONG I LISTENED TO…

It’s So Easy” by Ted Lucas

THE LAST MOVIE I WATCHED…

If we’re counting Get Back, the new Beatles documentary, that’s what I’m on right now. I’m not completely finished with it. I have 45 minutes of the last little bit left of it.

THE LAST MEAL I COOKED…

My wife and I just welcomed our first child into the world 12 weeks ago, so we have not been cooking at all, and neither of us enjoys cooking to begin with. However, the last meal I would have cooked was grilled cheese and tomato soup, if you consider that cooking.

THE LAST TIME I CRIED…

I don’t know how many weeks or days ago it was, since I don’t even know what time is anymore, but I had an existential moment seeing myself in my newborn daughter’s eyes. I’m far more emotional now than I’ve ever been, and I was pretty damn emotional before. I don’t envy my wife. [Laughs.]

THE LAST BOOK I READ…

That would have to be The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

THE LAST PLACE I WENT ON VACATION…

We actually just went to Chico, California, to take our daughter up north to where my wife is from. It was the baby’s first plane ride, and she got to see a bunch of friends and family. It was a nice little vacation, for sure.

THE LAST THING I THINK OF BEFORE FALLING ASLEEP…

The only thing I think about while trying to go to sleep is how to not think about anything.

THE LAST GIG I WENT TO…

At our band’s festival [8123 Fest], I was watching everyone’s set, but I really enjoyed getting to watch 3OH!3. That was awesome.

THE LAST TEXT MESSAGE I SENT…

It was just a second ago because our baby was crying in the other room. My wife texted me saying, “Sorry, she’s crying, and I’m trying to put her to sleep,” and I just said, “It’s OK.”

THE LAST TIME I LAUGHED OUT LOUD…

This is all baby-centric because, literally, that’s my whole life. There are some pretty funny farts that happen with babies. The emotion and the faces that coincide with the flatulence are pretty amazing. [Laughs.]
