The real reason Miley Cyrus decided to get sober may surprise you

Miley Cyrus is gearing up to release her rock-inspired album Plastic Hearts on Nov. 27. In preparation of its debut, she recently sat down with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe for a tell-all interview.

Over the years, Cyrus hasn’t been too shy about sharing her love for weed and experimentation with other drugs. On her 2013 album Bangerz, the former Disney star sings about experimenting with various drugs including MDMA and marijuana.

However, at the start of 2020, Cyrus decided it was time for a change. She tells Zane Lowe during the recent Apple Music interview that she quit drugs and alcohol because of the 27 Club. The 27 Club is made up of Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Jimi Hendrix among others who all passed away at the age of 27.

“27 to me was a year that I really had to protect myself,” she says. “That actually really made me want to get sober because we’ve lost so many icons at 27. It’s a very pivotal time.”

Cyrus does admit that she hasn’t been completely sober throughout 2020. Despite the relapse, she’s learning to accept herself and not be mad for the things she has done.

“I would never sit here and go, ‘I’ve been fucking sober.’ I fell off and I realized that I now am back on sobriety, two weeks sober, and I feel like I really accepted that time,” she says. “One of the things I’ve used is, ‘Don’t get furious, get curious.’ So don’t be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, ‘What happened?’”

She also tells Zane Lowe that she doesn’t have a problem with drinking. However, the decisions she makes while under the influence is what led to her sobriety.

“To me, it was a fuck up because I’m not a moderation person, and I don’t think that everyone has to be fucking sober,” Cyrus says. “I think everyone has to do what is best for them. I don’t have a problem with drinking. I have a problem with the decisions I make once I go past that level of… I’ve just been wanting to wake up 100 percent of the time.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cyrus also shares how Joan Jett, Billy Idol and Dua Lipa‘s features on Plastic Hearts came to be. As well, she confirms that she already has another album in the works.

Cyrus previously said that she is working on a Metallica covers album which could be revealed sometime in the future. Metallica are also one of the artists Cyrus credits for influencing Plastic Hearts‘ sound.
