The Academy Is... singer William Beckett looks back on debut album, 'Almost Here'

When the Academy Is… announced that they would be reuniting for a one-off, 10-year anniversary set at Riot Fest later this year, fans went berserk. And rightfully so—their beloved band are returning for a performance of their debut album, Almost Here, it its entirety. How crazy is that?

In the latest issue of AP, singer William Beckett spoke with contributing writer Annie Zaleski on the record and what went into creating it. “I feel like that was just in our DNA to try and do something interesting and different,” he says. “Not just for [the sake of being different], but also because we were passionate about evolving.”

Musically, it was ambitious for its time.

We approached all of our albums that way. I feel like that was just in our DNA to try and do something interesting and different. Not just for [the sake of being different], but also because we were passionate about evolving. From our first EP to Almost Here, it was almost two different bands completely. It’s interesting now, 10 years later, to think back at the process and where our headspace was. Overall, that was who we were. That record was a snapshot of exactly who we were.
