“The last day of summer never felt so cold” on Big Jesus’ cover of the Cure

If you need another reason to get moody about summer ending, Big Jesus has the song for you. Closing out the Amazon Original playlist “Songs Of Summer” is Big Jesus’ cover of “The Last Day of Summer.” The Atlanta rock band present their rendition of the track from the Cure’s 11th studio album, Bloodflowers (2000).

“When trying to figure out a band's song to cover, the Cure stuck out as a perfect option for us,” says guitarist CJ Ridings. “They're different enough for us to interpret their songs, but we share some of the same vibes on the more ethereal side. We had fun stepping a bit outside of our usual sound, while bringing 'The Last Day Of Summer' closer to a Big Jesus song.”

Indeed, the band play to their strengths and transform the song. Instead of the melancholy acoustic guitar and piano parts of the original, Big Jesus infuse rougher, angrier instrumentation. In their version, heavy guitar combines with singer Spencer Ussery’s dreamlike vocals to create the forlorn feeling that comes when it starts getting colder.

Founded in 2011, Big Jesus are an Atlanta-based quartet that can be found on the Madden Brothers’ MDDN management roster alongside Sleeping With Sirens and Waterparks. They’re known on social media as bigassjesus so you won’t confuse them for a Christian band.

Their blend of riff-heavy guitars and melodic vocals can be heard live this fall as they support Good Charlotte on the Youth Authority Tour, with openers the Story So Far, Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong and Hit The Lights. It will be their first time on the road since the release of their label debut Oneiric (which means “relating to dreams or dreaming”) set for Sept. 30.
