These 'Bly Manor' details may have revealed what's in store for season 3

Back in October, we were finally treated to the long-awaited The Haunting Of Hill House follow-up The Haunting Of Bly Manor. Even though it’s been almost two months since the latest season premiered on Netflix, we may already know what’s in store for season 3.

As it turns out, showrunner Mike Flanagan may have hinted at the plot for season 3 in the very first episode of Bly Manor.

For inspiration for Hill House and Bly Manor, Flanagan referenced stories of the past and transformed them into onscreen ghost stories we will never forget. The Haunting Of Hill House was based on Shirley Jackson‘s 1959 novel of the same name. As well, The Haunting Of Bly Manor was influenced by Henry James‘ 1898 The Turn Of The Screw, as well as other stories from the author.

Now, it looks like Flanagan may be taking inspiration from another novel for The Haunting‘s third season. According to Screen Rant, the upcoming season’s plot is hinted at mere minutes into the debut episode of The Haunting Of Bly Manor.

Flanagan is known for leaving hints and plenty of hidden ghosts throughout The Haunting series. In the first episode of Bly Manor, an older Jamie (Amelia Eve) arrives at a castle to help celebrate a wedding.

As the wedding guests arrive, the soon-to-be-married couple begins to discuss the supposed ghost of the castle who appears as a nun. As well, they note that the castle was once a convent.

“This place used to be a convent for, like, a few decades in the ’40s,” they said.

These details, though overlooked by many, may have revealed what’s in store for season 3. The story behind the castle and the description of the ghost closely relate to Charlotte Brontë‘s VilletteThe 1853 novel takes place in a convent and follows a nun who was supposedly buried alive on the grounds after breaking her chastity vow.

The ghost of the nun, Justine Marie, haunts the novel’s main character Lucy Snowe. Justine often appears to Lucy as a weeping woman who lost the man she planned to marry, Paul Emanuel. When her family objected to the marriage, Justine fled to the convent and became a nun.

Of course, this isn’t the only clue referencing Villette that is found in Bly Manor. The entire season is focused on the theme of love and the loss of a loved one. Similarly, in Brontë’s story, Lucy is told as a teenager that she will be reunited with the person she loves in death.

This detail is referenced in the final episode of Bly Manor when Jamie and Dani (Victoria Pedretti) appear together following Dani’s death. The detail also references the theme in Villette that a person can be reunited with their loved one in death. As well, both stories are largely narrated by women who have loved ones associated with death.

Although Flanagan has not confirmed what season 3 will focus on, it’s possible it might include themes and storylines from Villette. However, seeing as Bly Manor just premiered, it may be a while before we get any more details on the future season.
