Here’s a recipe for success: Put out one album every 10 years and only play a single out-of-town show each year (hello, the Fest). That’s been the career trajectory of San Diego’s Tiltwheel, like they actually give a fuck. The High Hate Us, the band’s first album in nearly a decade, puts them right back in gruff-punk mix with like-minded ragers such as Young Livers, the Tim Version and Leatherface. Especially Leatherface. Mostly in the vocals, but holy wow, there’s a lot of Leatherface influence on this album, which is just fine and dandy with us. “Teach Your Children Hell” and “Can’t Remember Shit” could have come straight off Fill Your Boots, which, again, is perfectly acceptable. Luckily, Tiltwheel could never be written off as any kind of clone band; opener “Make Like A Tree And Fuck Off” is ample evidence these guys have a songwriting knack all their own, overflowing with melody and abrasiveness all at once. It’s also safe to say they are probably the first band to use the double chorus of “You stupid cunt/You fucking asshole” in a song. Not your kid sister’s punk rock. Not even close.
