Tom DeLonge reveals solo song is about blink-182 “having quite the ride”

Tom DeLonge must be feeling a bit nostalgic about his youth as he shared a rather touching Instagram post today. He revealed that an older solo track of his titled “Suburban Kings” is about blink-182.

DeLonge is currently touring with his band Angels & Airwaves. Dec. 4 and Dec. 6 are the California dates for the winter tour so Tom is probably just reminiscing about his blink-182 days.

In 2015, just a month after departing blink-182, Tom DeLonge dropped his first studio album titled To the Stars…Demos, Odds and Ends. Today, Tom shared a post with a screenshot of the cover of that album and the song “Suburban Kings”.

I wrote this song a few years back about three young dudes from suburbia going far, and having quite the ride in rock n roll. Take a listen…

What’s the meaning behind this post? Is DeLonge just plugging an album he put out four years ago or is he just being nostalgic? Regardless, it’s a nice thought to reminisce about just how far blink-182 came from where they started. Thanks for the memories, Tom.

“Suburban Kings” Lyrics

Daddy is gonna come to meet us
Every guy that wished and fell
I got a brand new apartment
On the other side of Poway Hill
Every kid is dreading Monday
Ice is on my window sill
Waiting for a brand new skateboard
I’m waiting for a bit of skill
Tommy want a punk-rock weekend
And Tommy need a new guitar
Tommy ain’t a high school drop out
Who got kicked out of high school fall

I’m holding my head is gonna blow up right on
Wake shot up these words
I’ve got quite a bit of grey
Like they were yesterday
We were on our way
When the songs do their thing
And we’re singing

Suburban kings they will die but will rise up one day
Like little kids they will fight til they all get their way
And make the most of themselves
But we sound the alarm
Like they jumped straight out of Hell
A freaking hydrogen bomb
Bombs away

You gotta get the rules and break them
This house is getting out of hand
Mother’s got a thing for praying
But God is gonna hate my band
Tommy wants a life of purpose
Tommy has some dreams to plan
I drive to that shit apartment
I’m gonna build a punk-rock band

I’m holding my head is gonna blow up right on
Wake shot up these words
I’ve got quite a bit grey
Like they were yesterday
We were on our way
When the ships stop at lair
And we woke up the hell

Suburban kings they will die but will rise up one day
Like little kids they will fight til they all get their way
And make the most of themselves
But we sound the alarm
Like they jumped straight out of Hell
A freaking hydrogen bomb
Suburban kings they will die
But will rise up one day
With steady wings they will fly
From up and out of their cage
We show the worst of themselves
We must sound the alarm
These kids, they jumped out of Hell
A freaking hydrogen bomb
Bombs away

More Tom Delonge

Angels & Airwaves are currently on their winter tour and recently dropped a music video for their song “Kiss & Tell”.

Back when they dropped the song, Tom DeLonge gave further insight into how the song came together.

“The beginning of the song is really an ode to The Beach Boys,” Tom DeLonge explains. “It opens with three-part harmonies to create an introduction with multi-dimensionality. We wanted to create a sound that had electronic elements right alongside classic rock and pop-punk melodic structures.  Lyrically, this song is specifically about balancing on the edge of a razor blade. Doing something you’re not supposed to be doing, and although you might die while doing it, it’s still very much keeping you feeling alive.”
