twenty one pilots' Tyler Joseph is continuing to stay busy while in quarantine. Although the coronavirus pandemic has caused twenty one pilots' original plans to change for the year, Joseph is now revealing some of the details behind what he has been working on while at home.

In an interview this week with Apple Music, the twenty one pilots vocalist shares that we will be hearing a new album from him and Josh Dun sooner than we think.

twenty one pilots have been doing quite a lot of interviews lately. The duo recently hit up SiriusXM’s Alt Nation to host a show. They picked out a selection of songs that included the likes of Death Cab For CutieAngels & AirwavesAtreyuBox Car Racer and more.

Along with this, Dun recently gave an in-depth interview about "Level of Concern," Netflix's Tiger King and more. Joseph even did a social distancing interview back in April where he smoothly touched on the rumors that Dun and Debby Ryan are secretly married.

Now, Joseph is spilling even more secrets including the plans to release a new twenty one pilots album.

It's been nearly two years since their last full-length LP Trench was released. After extensively touring in 2019, twenty one pilots planned to hit the festival circuit this year. However, due to coronavirus, many concerts and festivals worldwide have been canceled. This put a hold on many of the plans twenty one pilots had in store this year including playing their only home state show of 2020 at Bunbury Music Festival.

"'20 for us was a bunch of festivals in Europe, festivals in South America and a few here stateside," Joseph says. "We had a headline in Moscow that we were really excited about. We were going to do our first stadium in Moscow. So yeah, a lot of plans put on hold. We're hoping that we'll be able to just kind of like pick up a lot of those plans and move them over to another year, but we're still making decisions and trying to figure out what's the right move."

Although they are disappointed in the cancelations, both Joseph and Dun are using this time to work on new music. In the interview with Zane Lowe, Joseph reveals that he is writing twenty one pilots' next album. Due to the sudden clear up of their schedules, Joseph shares that the new album will arrive sooner than anticipated.

"I'm writing a record right now," he says. "I'm not sure when it'll be released, but it's definitely going to be sooner than we were planning on releasing a record."

Since he is still in the writing process, Joseph doesn't know exactly where the new album will stand within twenty one pilots' discography.

"I don't know if it's this in-between record or if it's a continuation of the narrative and where we left off," Joseph shares.

As for if the new release will pick up where Trench left off in terms of narrative, Joseph is unsure. The lack of touring and exposure to the fandom Joseph is dealing with while in quarantine has greatly impacted his writing for this next album. So much so that he is not sure of what the album's narrative will end up fully being.

"It's kind of hard for me to tap into the story of Trench and what we've been building on up until that point without being there," he says. "Without touring, without having live shows, without interacting with our fans."

The Trench story Joseph is talking about is in regards to the world of Dema. Dema originated during the Trench album cycle. The city is referenced throughout the album and has sparked a number of fan theories over the years. In an interview earlier this month with Discord Clique, Joseph revealed that fans still haven't discovered everything involving the world of Dema yet.

During this time of uncertainty where live music has come to an abrupt stop, Joseph wants to use this collection of new songs to connect with his fans.

"Man, as much as I appreciate everyone getting on their computer and playing acoustic bedroom versions of stuff, it's old for me," Joseph tells Lowe in the new interview. "I don't want to just do that. I want to talk to our fans through a record. That's what I'm currently working on. Right before I got on this call, I was working on a new idea. I am excited about it."

Despite setbacks, Joseph remains optimistic about the future of the music industry. He is also optimistic about releasing music in a potentially over-saturated market of new music.

"I'm excited for what music is going to look like," he says. "Not just for us but for everyone We talked about this potential over-saturation of new music. It's exciting though because the way that Josh and I always approached, not just music but also specifically festivals, is we enjoy a sense of competition. We enjoy a sense of trying to release something and break through the noise."

Joseph touches on a lot of subjects in the Apple Music interview. He talks about a number of artists including Death Cab For Cutie, Ben Folds, Radiohead, and Billy Joel. He also reminisces about his first live performance and more. The full interview with Zane Lowe is available to listen to here.
