Twitter testing feature that tells you who to unfollow

It seems like Twitter is always working to make social networking more like real life. And, reportedly, the big blue bird even wants to help you ghost people online now. It’s testing out a feature that suggests who to unfollow.

Need help culling the herd? What if a customized menu of unfollow suggestions was presented to you upon logging into the app or site? It might make it a whole lot easier to finally boot great aunt Helen from your Twitter feed.

And while the test was only rolled out to a few Twitter users on a seemingly tentative basis, the social media giant “confirmed it did a trial of a feature that offers personalized lists of unfollow suggestions,” according to Hypebeast.

But how does it work? Per a rep quoted at Slate, the feature simply filters and selects those users with whom you don’t interact on a regular basis. (And if you’re anything like us, you know you can forget who’s even on your followers list!)

“We know that people want a relevant Twitter timeline. One way to do this is by unfollowing people they don’t engage with regularly.”

The “incredibly limited” test of the new unfollow feature, however, apparently stirred up some backlash. So, who knows if Twitter will actually roll this out sitewide, or it’s merely dipping its toe in the waters of suggesting who to sack.

Would you be interested in unfollowing help from Twitter? Did you happen to see the test feature pop up on your feed recently? Sound off in the comments, below, and let us know what you think of the social service’s latest experiment.
