It's official: 280-character tweets are here

Ah, Twitter. The platform that has kept us stuck with a brief 140-character limit since its start—that is, until now. The social media platform announced today that it will officially be expanding its character limit from 140 to 280 characters for all users.

Earlier this year, they announced that select users would have the expanded tweets, hoping to try it out with a small group of people before launching to everyone. And it's clear that they want everyone to have the ability to share their thoughts in 280 characters.

With the change, Twitter shared that people who had more room to tweet “received more engagement, got more followers and spent more time on Twitter.” Plus, they said that the “higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter.”

They also claim that only 5% of Tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only 2% were over 190 characters.

And those people who posted those obnoxiously long tweets? They think that's just a phase. “We expect to see some of this novelty effect spike again with this week’s launch and expect it to resume to normal behavior soon after.”
