Tyler Carter looks back on Underoath: "Aaron Gillespie was a big influence on me"

In the new, APMAs-exclusive issue of AltPress, Issues singer Tyler Carter talks with Senior Editor Ryan J. Downey about his roots and how Underoath had a significant impact on him. “My dad bought me a drum set, my mom bought me a keyboard, and I saved up enough money and bought a microphone and a little amp. My friends saw me and told me, ‘You know, there’s this band where the drummer also sings.’ That’s how I was introduced to Underoath. Aaron Gillespie was a big influence on me.”

How did your love affair with singing begin?

I was in church plays and musicals when I was younger. I got into music really aggressively when I started skateboarding. My dad bought me a drum set, my mom bought me a keyboard, and I saved up enough money and bought a microphone and a little amp. My friends saw me and told me, ‘You know, there’s this band where the drummer also sings.’ That’s how I was introduced to Underoath. Aaron Gillespie was a big influence on me. I was in different local bands until I was asked to sing for a pop-punk band, which is when I decided to focus on singing.
