Vine (as we know it) will soon be replaced with Vine Camera

Back in October, we received the sad news that Vine, as we know it, would be shut down, clarifying that users would have ample time to revisit their content over the next few months before the app would be shut down.

Now, the site’s FAQ page has updated to say that starting Jan. 17, the Vine app will become the Vine Camera.

According to the site, Vine Camera will be similar in construct to the original app. With short, 6.5 second looping videos, you will still be able to create the quick hitting content we've grown to love. However, once the video is live, you will no longer be able to download your Vines via the app.

“The Vine Camera will allow you to make 6.5 second looping videos and post them to Twitter, or save them to your camera roll in a logged out state,” the FAQ page says. “You will not be able to do any of the other things you can currently do with the Vine app. Once the Vine Camera is live, you will no longer be able to download your Vines from the app.”

Vine’s FAQ page also clarifies what will become of all the Vines already on the site (we're looking at your profile, Brendon Urie)—thankfully there’s hope that we won’t lose all of our favorites. They say that come January, they will transition the website to an archive of Vines that were created through the Vine app, so you can continue to browse those classic Vines that we just can't get enough of.

With the Jan. 17 date fast approaching, the site is encouraging users to download their Vines before the app changes to Vine Camera. A download of your Vine via the site will include an index.html file that saves your captions, along with the number of likes, comments and revines. However, if you download your Vines via the app, you will receive only your video files, saved to your camera roll, with no saved captions, likes or other additional information.
