In The Red - Volume 2

Volume 2

Mike Hale is a dude. He fronted influential and heavily awesome Gainesville, Florida, punks Gunmoll until they disbanded in 2003. Since then, he's kept busy with a strong body of solo work and a passionate dedication to touring. In The Red are Hale's return to full-band rock 'n' roll, and what they lack in speed, they make up for in thoughtful songwriting and the kind of lyrical depth you're just not capable of at 18. Jawbreaker are an obvious influence here, as are Hot Water Music and Avail, although Hale's slower, more deliberate method of attacking his songs separates him sonically from his influences. Where others might crib notes from Small Brown Bike, Hale turns to early-'90s Sub Pop, and that makes all the difference.
