Weezer announce limited "Africa" vinyl, but good luck getting one

Weezer have announced a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single of their recent viral cover of Toto‘s “Africa” (backed with the band’s fake-out cover of Toto’s “Rosanna“) to be available only at Urban Outfitters. And, hey, good luck getting one!

As noted by Noisey, the limited-to-1500 vinyl’s already sold out on Urban Outfitters’ website. Even the #WeezerCoverAfrica movement’s ostensible founder, @weezerafrica, can’t get her hands on one. Here’s Urban Outfitters’ description of the wax:

“You asked and Weezer granted with their instantly iconic cover of Toto’s ‘Africa,’ following a viral request. When one fan’s humble desire to hear Weezer cover ‘Africa’ caught on, the band responded with a take on another Toto song, ‘Rosanna,’ before finally giving the fans exactly what they wanted to hear. Listen to both on this green vinyl, with only 1500 limited units available exclusively at Urban Outfitters.”

And it looks like Weezer are really bringing home the bacon with the unlikely, Twitter-prompted ’80s cover. As previously reported by Pitchfork, the tune landed at No. 89 on the Billboard Hot 100 last month, giving the veteran Los Angeles alt act their highest-charting song since “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To,” which hit No. 91.

More new Weezer on the way

And a new album from the Weezer crew is coming soon. Reportedly, it’s going to be the much-rumored “The Black Album,” as noted by SPIN. Following 2017’s Pacific Daydream, frontman Rivers Cuomo says the group created the new album while finishing the last.

“This other album kind of materialized,” Cuomo told Double J. “I had two folders on my Dropbox: one was ‘The Black Album,’ and it didn’t get filled as quickly as this other folder. […] So, we put a name on it, Pacific Daydream, and put that out first.”

Do you bless the rains down in Africa? Were ya able to snag a copy of Weezer’s limited “Africa” b/w “Rosanna” vinyl at UO before it sold out? Does Kilimanjaro really rise like Olympus above the Serengeti? Sound off in the comments!
