Woodstock 50 applies for new venue with decreased capacity

It might be hard to find another event with the determination of Woodstock 50. After losing their original investor Dentsu Aegis Network, Woodstock tackled that issue by finding the festival another backer. The festival then faced the loss of their venue, forcing them to secure another location.

Now, it looks like a new location has been applied for but holds a much smaller capacity than the event’s original site.

Town of Vernon Supervisor Randy Watson told the Poughkeepsie Journal Woodstock 50 applied for a permit to hold their event Aug. 16-18 at Vernon Downs.

The racino, hotel and horse racing track is a smaller venue than Woodstock’s original location, Watkins Glen International.

Originally, the site was slated to hold 150,000 attendees. Now, according to Watson, the proposed capacity has shrunk to 45,000-50,000.

Woodstock 50 later told the Poughkeepsie Journal that the proposed capacity was actually 65,000.

Last week Stephen Donnelly, a representative for Vernon Downs, stated they were “one of a few organizations that are being considered” to hold Woodstock 50.

It’s uncertain what the decreased size could mean for the slated acts and multiple stages currently planned for the event.

Currently, the headliners for Woodstock 50 include Halseythe KillersJay-ZChance The Rapper and Miley Cyrus. The Black Keys were also set to headline but dropped out.

More on Woodstock 50

Earlier this month, TMZ reported Watkins Glen International terminated the festival’s site license.

The venue cited its contract with Woodstock as the reason behind the permit scrap.

“Watkins Glen International terminated the site license for Woodstock pursuant to provisions of the contract,” the racetrack said in a statement. “As such, WGI will not be hosting the Woodstock 50 Festival.”

Tim O’Hearn, an administrator for Schuyler County where Woodstock was to be held, tells The Poughkeepsie Journal that the cancellation “comes as a major disappointment to us in that we looked forward to hosting this iconic event in our community.”

He adds, “While today’s announcement is difficult to absorb, it is not completely unexpected, given the well-publicized delays related to this planned event. We commend Watkins Glen International for their actions, which we feel are in the overall best interest of the community.”
