Clown business is seriously suffering, thanks to It and “layoffs of regional Ronald McDonalds.” And, really, any “crazed clowns in movies,” including Heath Ledger's Joker, Jack Nicholson's Joker and Twisty on AHSThe Washington Post shares.

The news source reports that 240 clowns assembled for the World Clown Association convention in Minnesota, and they just wanted to know: Haven’t clowns suffered enough?

“There’s no secret that clowning is taking a hit. It’s not something new,” former Ringling clown and International Clown Hall of Fame founder Greg DeSanto said. “The kitsch thing to say is ‘I’m afraid of clowns.’ What do you think I’m going to do? Make you laugh?”

The Washington Post explains that they scorned Stephen King's Pennywise repeatedly.

“I’ve been told that ‘you can’t come to the hospital. You’ll scare people.’ That was really heartbreaking,” one clown vet told the news source. “It’s diminished my income. The damage is done in so many respects. There’s a whole generation that, when they think of a clown, they think of something scary.”

Who still love clowns, though? People in nursing homes.

BUT many clowns are planning on changing a few things, including the makeup. And they're not about to lose hope and still believe that clowns will survive, despite the fear.

“Clowning will never be what it was, but I know it will continue to go on and on,” Manuel says. “We’ll survive the closing of the circus. We’ll survive scary movies. There’s something in the human spirit that wants to make people laugh and be happy. Once you do it, you have to do it—even though it might not be the popular thing.”
