We may still be a month away from the release of YUNGBLUD’s new album, but fans have already gotten plenty of tastes of Weird! this year. It all started back in April when YUNGBLUD released the album’s title track along with an entertaining video.

Then, in July, he followed up “weird!” with the explosive rock singlestrawberry lipstick.” The modern-day love song features glam-rock influences alongside YUNGBLUD’s distinctive snarling vocals and charismatic energy, making it one of his catchiest and energetic songs yet.

In September, however, YUNGBLUD showed fans another side to him with “god save me, but don’t drown me out.” The emotional single is a beacon of hope for fans that may find themselves struggling in dark times.

Inspired by anxiety and depression, the song is a reminder to listeners that life does get better in the end. Along with the single’s heavy themes, fans also think the “god save me, but don’t drown me out” video may have a nod to My Chemical Romance in it.

Now, YUNGBLUD has released the fourth single off of Weird! called “cotton candy.” The pop-infused anthem is all about finding yourself and exploring your sexuality. For YUNGBLUD, he shares that sexual liberation is about figuring out who you love and who you want to be.

“‘cotton candy’ is about sexual liberation,” YUNGBLUD says. “To me, sex and sexuality is about freedom and the idea that you can to lose yourself in other people of all genders, of all shapes and sizes to find yourself and figure out who you truly are. Sexual interaction should not be shamed, it should be celebrated because to have safe sex is to spread love and the world needs love more than ever right now.”

YUNGBLUD also says that “cotton candy” is particularly important to him because of its message to fans. He hopes listeners can identify with the new single and realize that they can be, and love, whoever they want to.

“This song is so important to me because I see and speak to my fan base, facing insecurities around sexual interaction,” he says. “I want to let them know that it is ok to be EXACTLY WHO THEY ARE and have the right to unconditionally love who they want and be loved in return.”

Following the release of “cotton candy,” YUNGBLUD took to social media to express how happy he is that the song is finally out. As well, he will be picking 10 lucky fans to chat with over Skype on Saturday, Oct. 10.
