Zac Efron’s EDM movie suffers one of the worst opening weekends of all time
While Straight Outta Compton held its reign over the box office this past weekend, Max Joseph's (Catfish) Zac Efron-led EDM drama We Are Your Friends flat out tanked. With a modest budget of $6 million, the film's opening weekend saw a dismal return at $1.8 million, awarding it the worst opening weekend of all time for a Hollywood studio film playing in 2,000 or more theaters (via Billboard).
For a bit of perspective, some films that did better than We Are Your Friends in their respective opening weekends: The Real Cancun, Bandslam, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie and Firehouse Dog. In minor defense of the situation, Warner Bros' VP for domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein, says, "This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him. Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film."
If you want to see how many beats per minute you can withstand and simultaneously contribute to what's become somewhat of a charity case, you can go see We Are Your Friends in theaters now. The film stars Zac Efron, Wes Bentley, Emily Ratajkowski, Jon Bernthal and more.
