Zach Braff launches Kickstarter campaign to fund 'Garden State' follow-up

Zach Braff wants your money–but wait, it's for a good reason.

Braff hasn't written or directed a movie since 2004's Garden State, the now-classic Millennial film. However, after taking a cue from another twentysomething favorite, he's started his own Kickstarter campaign to fund his next film, Wish I Was Here.

“After I saw the incredible way Veronica Mars fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show’s creator Rob Thomas, I couldn’t help but think (like I'm sure so many other independent filmmakers did), 'Maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn’t involve signing away all your artistic control.,” Braff says in a video for the campaign.

In the video, Braff describes Wish I Was Here as “not a sequel in story” to Garden State “but a sequel in tone.”

“I wrote Garden State at a time in my life when I was feeling overwhelmed and lost in my 20s,” Braff says. I guess you could say Wish I was Here is about the next chapter in your life in your 30s.”

The project, which was launched today, hopes to raise $2,000,000 by Friday, May 24. At last check, it had already raised more than $600,000.
