Noah Cyrus apologizes after using derogatory term to defend Harry Styles
It looks like Noah Cyrus is in some hot water online this week. On Thursday, Cyrus shared a post defending Harry Styles amid the controversy surrounding his Vogue photoshoot.
However, her choice of words in the post has sparked a lot of backlash on social media. Now, Cyrus has issued an apology.

Last month, Styles graced the cover of Vogue in a dress. The photoshoot eventually earned both praise from fans and criticism from commentators who believe the One Direction member shouldn’t wear feminine clothes. Then, earlier this week, Styles indirectly responded to the criticism he received in the best way possible.
Since the Vogue photos were released, Styles has received support from various individuals in the entertainment industry including Jameela Jamil, Zach Braff and Olivia Wilde. On Thursday, he also earned support from Noah Cyrus on her Instagram story.
However, Cyrus used a derogatory term in her post defending Harry Styles which quickly received backlash online. Nearly 24 hours after the Instagram story went live, “Noah Cyrus” began trending on Twitter on Thursday.

Now, Cyrus has issued an apology on her Instagram Story. In the post, she says that she was unaware of the history behind the term used and greatly apologizes to anyone she offended.

“I am mortified that I used a term without knowing the context and history, but I know now and I am horrified and truly sorry,” she says. “I will never use it again. Thank you for educating me. I in no way meant to offend anyone, I am so sorry.”
Despite the timely apology, some are pointing out the bigger issues and implications of Cyrus using that term. As well, others want to know what she thought the words actually meant.
noah cyrus saying she didn’t know the “history” of the word is such a perfect example of non-black ppl freely messing around with black things with no repercussions until they finally trip up and now get a chance to play the “i’m learning❤️ pls educate me❤️” card pic.twitter.com/GvM37J5qie
