SeeYouSpaceCowboy get personal with “Late December”—watch

SeeYouSpaceCowboy have molded a sound that’s currently missing from metal. It’s one that fuses the moody hits that bloomed in the early aughts of the Myspace era, along with splintering screams. Formed in 2016, the self-described “self-indulgent” project is based in nostalgia but has proven to be popular with both pop-punk die-hards and metalheads. And they’ve done so through not only their polarizing image but their lyrics.
The band have teamed up with AltPress to exclusively release the music video for “Late December,” a track off their new album, The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds. Frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa also gave AP insight into how the darker parts of her life translated into the video.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy—Sgarbossa, her brother/guitarist Ethan, guitarist Jesse Price, bassist Cameron Phipps and drummer Bryan Prosser—have always pushed boundaries, writing songs that are both politically charged and sardonic, a combination that has proven to be captivating. But for their latest single, “Late December,” the vocalist gets personal. It’s an approach that Sgarbossa brought to the new album—SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s first collection of music following their 2019 compilation record, Songs For The Firing Squad.
The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds is focused on conflict. Sonically, it’s found in one- and two-minute snippets of hardcore metal in “Prolonging The Inevitable Forever” and “Armed With Their Teeth.” When paired with the instrumental backsounds that resemble a film score, it presents a musical tug of war between soft and hard. More so, it establishes that SeeYouSpaceCowboy can falter between two distinct sounds in a single track and that, ultimately, they’re not afraid to take risks.
Both the album and music video for “Late December” gives listeners a personal viewpoint into Sgarbossa’s life. Throughout her 24 years, she’s faced many problems, including suicide, mental illness and addiction. And while the vocalist hadn’t previously revealed the intimate details of her life, she used it to fuel her inspiration for SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s 11-track album.
“The lyrics and video both highlight different trials and chronicle my struggle to accept loss and the permanence of death, along with my own existential crisis and struggles with addiction in the process,” Sgarbossa says.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy are taking a turn inward with this release, with Sgarbossa saying that The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds allowed her to reconsider her identity as a trans woman singing political punk. More than just her sexual identity, she shares the strength and endurance she possesses that helped her overcome the hurdles in her life.
Spliced with clips of blue, cloudy skies and waves brushing up against a beach shore, the music video for “Late December” juxtaposes these idyllic images with shots of broken glass and blood dripping into a bathtub. Leaning against a brick and hidden beneath her mop of hair, Sgarbossa lunges into a screaming narrative.
The video serves as a visual representation of the trauma that the vocalist has endured as she breaks into violent fits while sitting in a bathtub. To calm her nerves, she smokes cigarettes and drinks red wine. It seems Sgarbossa can find no solace, though, as the camera captures her sinking into a bottomless black by the end.
With heavy metal typically centering on fear-inciting topics such as hell, blood and death, it’s ultimately refreshing to see SeeYouSpaceCowboy focus their lyrics on the personal hells they’ve lived, the blood they’ve spilt and the death they’ve faced on The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds.
